Washing wool in the river is best done early in the day when the water runs cold. If there’s a lot of water in the river, you don’t have to walk far, but if it has slowed to a trickle, you have to find a spot where the river is flowing fast and deep enough to create a pool with stacked rocks. . In the High Atlas, the women don’t boil the wool to clean it. They pound it vigorously with sticks to break up clods of dirt and feces. Then, they use the natural flow of the water to “comb” out the debris. . Before coming to Morocco, I always thought raw wool had to be boiled to clean it. The women at the river taught me differently! This method suits the fuel-scarce region where it’s hard enough to find wood for fires.
