During the Heian period (794-1185, Jap. for peace) in Japan, sakura was a popular theme in both paintings and poetry. The cherry blossom’s fleeting beauty is often praised as a metaphor for life in these old poems ☺️. Famous poet Ariwara no Narihira (825-880) captured the meaning of sakura in his own words:
“If sakura did not exist
How quiet would it be
How calm could I have lived this season”. For him, sakura defines spring and without it, all the excitement about this new season would be gone. We definitely feel like the cherry blossoms are able to wake up the entire country and bring about a new level of excitement for this season - what about you? What do you love most about spring?

How was your Easter weekend?
Swipe to enjoy my photos and videos from the sakura festival at Ueno Park. Don’t miss the videos!
My weekend was fabulous as I travelled to all the places around Mt Fuji. It’s called the Fuji five lakes tour. Check out my stories for sneak peaks!! I’ll soon share lots of photos from my weekend getaway so stay tuned!
Hanami at Ueno Park was so much fun. Although it was bustling with hundreds or maybe thousands of people, the 800 cherry trees in the park are worth viewing every spring.
Photo 1: This was a hidden gem in the over populated park because it’s further inside towards the back of the Ueno Toshogu shrine and beside the peonie gardens. Majority of the crowd usually enjoys hanami at the wide open spaces lined by the sakura trees and the food stalls. It’s more peaceful to explore these sparsely populated areas.
Photo 2: there was a long line to get into the Ueno Toshogu shrine. It was first built in 1627 and represents the Shinto architecture of the Edo period. For some reason this shrine remained intact and survived the Battle of Ueno in 1868, the world wars and the massive earthquakes that shook Tokyo through the ages.
⛩
Photo3: enjoy the cherry blossoms at the Ueno Tōshō-gū shrine.
Video 1: the crowd at the hanami area.
Video 2: couldn’t go live for you all so I’m posting the videos here.
Video 3: thought it’s a selfie but its a video lol! Has it ever happened to you?

Daydreaming of this View ⛩⠀
⠀
Last year this time, I was surrounded by the beautiful Sakura & the stunning view of the majestic Mount Fuji My current IG feed is full of all the pretty blooms in Japan & it makes me so so nostalgic about our cherry blossom moments. I was so amazed to witness Mount Fuji in all its glory for 2 full days & it's SO HUGE! One of the most cherishing moments in Japan ⛩ ⠀
⠀
TRAVEL TIP: Best views of Mt Fuji are seen from Lake Kawaguchiko (pictured) and Chureito Pagoda. Definitely spend at least 2 nights in Kawaguchiko because Mt Fuji spends a lot of the time shrouded in clouds; this would maximize your chances of seeing it! ⠀
⠀
Have you experienced cherry blossoms in Japan? ⠀

SWIPE FOR ORIGINAL

Another spring, another throwback to the last time I was in Tokyo for sakura season—which was SIX YEARS AGO. I was in college, and took a crazy trip with a friend over spring break to Japan! Of course, I didn’t know the first thing about taking “Insta-worthy” photos, and I could consider these captures a loss. But occasionally I like to challenge myself to edit and share these old shots! Because even if the photos aren’t as “good,” the memories are just as special.
