Stablecoins are currently the fastest growing sector of the cryptocurrency market, worth $186 billion; these constitute cryptocurrencies whose values are pegged to real life commodities like gold or the US dollar. This is opposed to traditional cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum whose markets are very volatile and can fluctuate by 10-20 percent in the space a few hours, causing massive uncertainty among investors. Governments across the globe from Australia to Sweden are realizing stablecoins’s potential and developing their own, as well as official blockchain funds developing GPB and Japanese Yen pegged coins. The stablecoin Basis refers to this as having an algorithmic central bank and uses ‘crypto-bonds,’ which have attracted criticism for being too similar to the flaws of the traditional banking system. NY-based Paxos plans to launch digital tokens backed by previous metals this year. "The goal is to... settle transactions more quickly and securely... with lower fees" says CEO Chad Cascarilla. Paxos already offers a dollar-backed stablecoin as well as Bitcoin trading services. To make it work, Paxos must always hold equivalent inventory (be it USD, gold, or stocks) IRL as are registered on the blockchain. Simply put, the amount of gold listed in a vault must equal amount of gold tokens outstanding. Paxos is the only crypto company with an account at the Depository Trust Company, and is therefore well-positioned to be the first to bring stock trading to the blockchain. Ultimately though, the firm still needs approval from the SEC before it can roll out cryptocurrencies tied to more traditional securities. So, what do you think?
