Ales stenar. (Valleberga 20:1) - Arguably the most famous ancient site in Skåne, the stone ship known as Ales stenar (Ale's Stones) was as amazing as I imagined. It is erected on a height 32m above sea level overlooking the Baltic Sea in the village Kåseberga on Skåne's southern coast. The name comes from the legendary Swedish King, Ale den starke (Ale the Strong), who in folktales believed buried here. In the distance on a clear day it is possible to see the Danish island of Bornholm. The 67m long, 19m wide stone ship is made up of 59 standing stones, the largest weighing 5 tons. There is also an altar stone at one end of the ship. There are some scholars who believe it was also used as a astronomic calendar. When I got there the place was swarming with tourists so I had to wait almost an hour until there was nobody in the photos. - In 1989 an excavation was done to date it and a decorated clay pot with cremated human bones was found inside the ship. The contents varied in age with carbon-14 dating, some from 330–540CE and a piece of charred food from 540–650CE. Under one standing stone was birchwood charcoal from 540–650CE. Carbon-14 dating was done on 7 organic samples from the site, 6 dated to around 600CE but one from 3,500BCE. The old sample from soot-covered stones near the ship is believed to be remnants of a Stone Age hearth. After analyzing all the data the Swedish Nation Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet) suggested that Ales stenar was built about 550CE which puts it in the Vendel Period. - In 2012 another excavation was done on a feature outside the ship found with georadar. Carbon-14 dating found it to be 5,500 years old placing it in the middle of the Neolithic. This confirmed their theory that a Stone Age dolmen of the "long dolmen" (långdös) type stood here. The only remains of the dolmen's large stone blocks were the filled in pits where they stood. Cup marks (skålgropar) were also discovered on top of some of the standing stones of the ship. Most dolmen were marked with cup marks during the Bronze Age so it is believed that some of the stones were reused to build the ship. I found some of these cup marks, you can see them in the photos.
