The Northrop YF-17 Cobra which would ultimately evolve into the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. The YF-17 competed against the YF-16 For the Air Force’s Lightweight Fighter. Though the 16 won, the winner of these competitions is more about meeting the requirements vs being outright better. When the Navy was ordered to choose a cheaper fighter to augment the F-14, they were given the same two options. Neither of which was carried capable! So whichever one the Navy chose would need to be redesigned into a carrier capable fighter. The 17 was a little closer to that goal than the 16. The Navy preferred two engines and (from my understanding) the 17 had better low altitude maneuverability + its angle of attack when landing wasn’t as high. I think!
