Most survivors experience extreme feelings of shame, fear, depression, anxiety and PTSD - and others are not even in a state to process their assault at the time. Some survivors have nowhere to turn after their assault, or were not educated about the resources they do have. Perhaps their abuser manipulated them emotionally, or maybe it was a superior in their workplace and they feared they would lose their job. Maybe it was a relative. Maybe they felt people would think differently of them. All of these reasons, and more, are valid. ✨this sexual assault awareness month I was so glad to co-lead these workshops with the brilliant @amitaswadhin (founder of @mirror.memoirs) at @dcenterplu organized by @_saikick_ despite being unable to walk. I am so enamored with the banners that student survivors, admin, and allies were able to make together for #TakeBackTheNight rally on campus. Like @Amitaswadhin so brilliantly stated: “everyone is a survivor or the loved one of a survivor. So many of us are both...No one is born a rapist, our society created rape culture, therefore we need to see rape culture as an system/epidemic we must collectively end the same way we see white supremacy as one. There is no ending sexual violence without reconciliation and reparations for the crimes of genocide, slavery and occupation world wide.” I am interested in how we can come together as a community of survivors and allies to imagine a portal to a future without rape culture. What would healing and accessibility to mental health look like in that world? What would first dates and love look like in that world? What would it look like to walk upon those streets? I am always so humbled to be learning from seasoned activists like Amita, who have been championing the work for 20 years to end childhood sexual abuse and rape culture, transformative justice leaders, as well as young students who are leading this work in their own way.
