Curved hemostatic forceps are great for holding smaller pieces of sponges for #surfacecleaning. This is a demonstration on a paper from the study collection with black pigment to simulate surface grime. An additive-free chemical sponge is cut-down to pieces of approximately 2x1x1 cm. The forceps grab the piece in the upper half. The locking handle prevents the sponge from dropping. The compression of the sponge in the upper part creates a convex cleaning edge that can be used for detailed surface cleaning, for example around friable media. We are very happy with the results of this clean, in our latest timelapse video! Our conservator, Lito, used a combination of solvents to remove years of surface contaminants and dirt. The sitter is Miss Cecilia Isabella Gale, daughter of James Losh Esq, a progressive and radical lawyer, reformer and abolitionist. The painting is early 19th century, circle of English portrait painter John Hoppner.
