Each January, the city of Pernik, Bulgaria becomes a scene of a unique masquerade ritual. Known as Surva Folk Festival, it marks the beginning of the new year. On the first night of Surva, Survakari, or groups of men, women and children parade the streets wearing specially prepared masks and costumes. They gather in the village center where they light fires and play with the audience. Early the next morning, the Survakari go from house to house, where they ritually marry young couples while a person dressed as a bear ‘mauls’ people for good health. Hosts await their arrival with a ritual meal and gifts. After the folk feast, the Survakari distribute the gifts, often collecting donations for less fortunate people. Inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible list, the Surva festival appeals to young people and raises their self-esteem as legacies of an ancient tradition. Whole families engage in collecting materials for the masks and the other attributes during that entire year, with adults teaching young people and children how to make the distinctive masks and costumes.
