Timberpoint Medusa! Man I’m happy with this bow! At some point I’ll talk about how it shoots and what makes this bow special compared to other longbows, but I got to get a few more glamor shots up for it. #tradlife #tradarchery #traditionalarchery #bowandarrow

What’s happening in your shoulder while you draw and hold?
As soon as the archer applies pressure to the string, the bicep, posterior shoulder, and upper back musculature begins to contract. Quickly, the archer encounters the peak weight of the draw, which maximally engages the musculature listed above, all while its in a lengthened state. Functionally, the muscles aren’t as efficient or protected in this lengthened state, which is why it’s critical to strengthen your musculature outside of just shooting a bow.
As the archer is drawing, the shoulder blade must glide on the rib cage. The shoulder blade moves down and towards your spine, which clears room in the shoulder joint to continue drawing. Without scapular movement, pain and irritation arises from collision and rubbing inside the joint. Healthy shoulder blades that move and stabilize are important to avoid pain!
At full draw, most compound bows offer a significant amount of let-off. Therefore, muscular contraction is still present but not nearly as significant. Instead, the archer is focusing on back tension throughout the upper back muscles and shoulder blade. Think, “Put your shoulder blade into your opposite back pocket”. Contrary to popular belief, most shoulder issues in the draw arm have little to do with full draw position. Rather, the start and process of the draw tends to be much more stressful on the joint.
⚠️ Dysfunction in any of the above mechanics can lead to PAIN. Why? The shoulder joint is just like a machine— it has a specific function and form it must follow. If your shoulder doesn’t move correctly and resist movement when necessary, then the machine malfunctions. These malfunctions build up and cause pain.
