With the help of multilingual tour guide @shokhrukh_is, we sweet talked the guards at the monumental Tashkent Circus to letting us peek indoors in between shows (no ticket required). The Soviet Modernist theater-in-the-round was erected in 1977; more than four decades later, it’s a picture of faded grandeur that still hosts twice-daily performances by a Russian circus. The show is oriented toward children but includes acrobats, strongmen, and daredevil tightrope walkers.
It could do with a lick of paint, but the Uzbek State Circus is a fabulous piece of socialist modernist architecture.
