It will be an exciting step forward for strengthening the cooperation of producing and consuming countries#teatraining #teaindustry#teapromotion#teamaster #trade#technology#tealovers#teacommittee
We would like to share with you the story behind the package of our teas. During our stay in Japan it became clear that the tea industry is not as booming as we sometimes think it is..Everywhere you look in big cities, you will find a coffee shop (not that we don't like coffee).. ;) In contrary to tea houses. We had to search for traditional tea houses, and again, most of the times it was not a traditional teahouse, but a tea shop where you could buy bubble tea or matcha ice creams. What's happening here? It seems that the western (or american?) influence has arrived in Japan. The current generation is not looking for a healthy, japanese tea. No, they are looking for a starbucks coffee or matcha bubble tea with lots of sugars..Just like anywhere else in the world. The tea industry in Japan is not going too well. Tea farmers are becoming older and older, while the new generation is not interested in working on a tea plantation. Working in the city earns way more money and is more exciting. The result? Tea farmers are too old to work on the field; nobody wants to take over the business and the tea fields are abandoned. It is quite a sad story! Just since a couple of years, the japanese tea industry is focusing more and more on export of their beautiful teas. Our tea farm tries to create a bigger organic tea production, and collaborates with farmers around the whole country to share their knowledge about organic farming. And, together they are giving a new life to the abandoned tea fields. They are made ready for a new life; organic tea farming is the way to go! And we are very proud to being able to support this projects; this is how we can share this delicious green sencha which is produced on a previously abandoned tea field! .

TEA MYTH time! Often the image of the tea industry is beautiful pictures of smiling people and breathtaking views of tea plantations. Though the reality behind those pictures often takes our breath away in a negative way... For the majority of the tea sold in the supermarkets, we don't really know where it is coming from, how it was made and who are the people behind it.
Many people also don't know that it's actually really hard work to pluck the tea leaves and the conditions workers live in are unbearable to imagine for the western world. Even if the farms are certified by organisations that should protect the plantation workers, only a fraction of the price we pay for the tea goes to the workers and at the same time they are lacking drinking water and medical help... It's not an easy problem to solve, requiring action from different levels, but we as consumers can lead this change by purchasing teas from trustworthy producers and farmers. The next time you are buying tea, take this extra time to find out where it is actually coming from and who are the people behind it!

I was meant to go on stage at @helsinkicoffeefestival today as Finland’s first certified teasommelier and talk about my expertise area: quality and sustainability in tea. One of my main goals is to develop the whole tea industry and increase knowledge, as often not even the tea sellers know what they are selling, what is true quality and fake or old information is a huge issue in the tea industry.
Unfortunately, my baby bump stopped me from traveling, so I gathered the information in a nutshell on my Instagram stories. It will be available on my Instagram profile. Please read the oh-so important information and feel free to comment on the contents if it inspired you ❤️
My exhibition on the people of tea, “Within Each Cup,” begins today at the International Center of Photography Museum in New York City (ICP). It’s free and visible to the public as part of their ‘Projected’ series and runs through November 26th, 2018. Link in bio. ⠀
⠀
I’m organizing an informal meetup this Friday the 23rd to view it. Let’s meet at the McNally Jackson Bookstore Cafe (52 Prince St) at 5PM and then walk over to ICP at 6. Dress appropriately and see you there! ⠀

I’m so honored to see my tea story published in the BBC (@bbcnews) this morning. Not only am I ever grateful for the experience and all the things I learned about the world and myself along the way, I feel ready to continue giving a visual voice to women, people, and cultures that are often overlooked. It’s been a theme in all my projects and I won’t stop now. Thank you to all of my friends and mentors who have been a part of this journey! Link in bio.
