The rich history and diversity of Guizhou’s indigenous teas can be traced back 2500 years. Villagers have been making teas their own ways using techniques passed down throughout generations.
Duo Bei tree from west, Niao Wang (bird king) from the east, Tai from the north, to name a few.
Due to the global demand for industrialised green tea, Guizhou is becoming the fastest growing tea region in China and will become the biggest tea producing province by 2020. Starbucks, Unilever have already been onto the case, buying Guizhou’s tea in tons in the past two years, there is only more to come.
Financially this has helped many villages thrive, getting out of the poverty line (by UN standards). However this also means vast primeval forest turning into tea plantations, cutting off indigenous tea trees to plant more generic cultivars like Fu Ding.
As a child growing up in the mountains of Guizhou, what I’ve witnessed this spring breaks my heart.
But I still firmly believe, through persistence in sharing Guizhou’s wild and ancient teas, we can find a balance between tea plantation and indigenous teas, we can sustain ancient tea-making knowledge by sharing it with industrialised tea processing, we can prove that there is a demand for these teas internationally so that we can help those least privileged villagers to realise the potential and value of our traditions.
Join me my friends, help me share these teas and their stories further, share this gentle yet uncompromising voice of those villagers, who devote their lives sustaining a dying tradition that belongs to all of us for years to come.
Wherever you are, whether you are a tea business owner, a tea lover or a kind soul with curiosity and open heart, message me for a free signature pack. Let’s stay together, let’s join forces, let’s start this beautiful journey together.
With all my love,
Rui
We are always in awe of the amount of human effort put into making tea. Puttabong Darjeeling Tea Estate, the oldest tea estate in India, is a fine example of the work that is put into every leaf. From the 150 year old tea bushes that are organically grown and maintained, every bit of tea is hand harvested and processed according to weather and growing conditions.

We love sharing tea! And we love it more when we get to meet young people whose openness and curiosity makes each one of our brew more hopeful and meaningful.
This spring, we will also be backing up local young people back in Guizhou, to learn the ancient tea-making tradition as apprenticeship.
Just like nurturing young trees in the wilderness, let’s share our knowledge, care and kindness to the kindreds young spirits, who will multiply what we give to the world for years to come.
