Recently, you've seen me post a lot about advocacy work to ban neonicotinoid pesticides in Texas. Neonicotinoids, or neonics for short, are the most widely used class of pesticides in the US. The name 'neonicotinoid' literally means 'new nicotine-like insecticides'. They are also 'systemic' pesticides, meaning they dissolve in water and are absorbed by plants, making the plant itself—including its nectar, pollen, and fruit—toxic. Research clearly shows that these pesticides are killing bees and changing their behaviors. Exposure to neonicotinoids can impact a bee's ability to forage and find food, learn and remember where flowers are located, impair their ability to fly and navigate, suppress their immune system, and ultimately shorten their life. While neonicotinoids are not the only problem that bees face today, they're certainly one of their biggest threats.
