April 17 1998, Linda McCartney passed away.

Death came at 56, from cancer that had begun in her breast but had spread to her liver. Two days before the end, she was able to ride her favorite horse one last time. Paul described the final moments: "The kids and I were there when she crossed over. They each were able to tell her how much they loved her. Finally I said to her, 'You're up on your beautiful Appaloosa stallion. It's a fine spring day...and the sky is clear blue.' I had barely got to the end of the sentence when she closed her eyes and gently slipped away."

The McCartney marriage was epic - in every way - particularly by rock standards. Only mortality kept them from thirty years together, and it was a point of pride that the only real time they’d spent apart was the stretch Paul did in a Japanese jail in 1980. ·
Though the object of cruel insults during her lifetime, Linda endured the derision with as much grace as someone placed into a life she didn’t choose for herself as well as one could. Musical abilities aside, her passion for animal issues and promoting vegetarianism was commendable. Maybe her most fitting legacy is the children she and Paul raised together, each pursuing apparently well-adjusted lives and fulfilling their talents.
