#waxplantwednesday I am soooooo thrilled to get this one to bloom on the first try!! I’ve heard it’s a tough one but thankfully it’s behaved for me since day one and has rewarded me with this marvelous display!! . Story time: When I was just becoming interested in Hoyas (like literally a year ago) I spent a lot of time reading and ogling over pictures on Doug Chamberlain’s website (www.vermonthoyas.com). I know I’m preaching to the choir when I say that Doug’s website is like one of the first places any Hoya collector goes to read up on particular sp. I mean his website material and YouTube vids are just awesome!! And I always used to think “gosh..it would be so cool to add a few Hoyas from his collection to mine” (no really..ask @farm.coast.house.plants! When we still lived in RI I told her this very thing!!) And thanks to my sweet @plantsplantsmoreplants and her help, the opportunity was there and it finally happened!! This Hoya lockii was a recent acquisition directly from Doug and his collection and I could not be more excited about it!! There is something very special about adding a plant to your collection that is from a person that you admire and really has enriched your knowledge on something! I have learned so much (and still continue to learn more) from the material that Doug shares on his experiences with growing Hoyas and to have this little piece of his collection is really special to me. . I also wanted to add that yet again, I have an example here of a Hoya that breaks this stupid myth people keep spreading that Hoyas need to be a few years old or root bound to bloom. FALSE. Stop spreading these lies, folks!! It’s simply not true!! If you’ve had your Hoya for years and it hasn’t bloomed, it’s not because it’s not old enough. It’s because it’s not in the ideal conditions it needs to be in to bloom. This H. lockii was nothing more than a 6” rooted cutting with 4 leaves when I received it back in May. Since then, it has grown an entirely new vine, 4 more leaves, two peduncles, and has bloomed for me. How did it do all that in a little over a month? I provided the right conditions for it. Several months back, I ordered a 4" so-called rooted plant off eBay, and received a 2" plant (buried in extraneous soil in an oversized pot). It happens. Live and learn. The silver lining is that hoya retusa is a fast grower. Friends, I share this because I love you. I have found Hoyas at a nursery in Daly City (Lolol I know my non-sf fam is thinking where is that)!!The epitome of a hidden gem. Tony is the co-owner and has an incredible collection of plants for sale! He is so knowledgeable too, and helped me pot this Hoya Latifolia so beautifully. Check his page out @letstalkplants and the full video in my stories . . What potting mix do you use for your hoyas? Tony recommended bark because it is an epiphyte and naturally grows in the crevices of rocks and trees! I’m giving it a go! Will keep y’all posted . . #hoyalatifolia
