I learned to knit when I was 4. That went how you'd expect until I was 17 and dating my now husband and wanted to knit him a scarf.
Young me knew nothing of the curse of the boyfriend sweater. (The "curse" says you will break up by the time you knit the last stitch. Since generally knitting a sweater takes quite a bit of time)
Fast forward *cough cough cough* years to when he and I married.
Barely 2 months later and my youngest brother-in-law was killed in a car accident. The car also contained 2 others of my brother-in-laws and one friend.
To deal with my grief I sold some school books back to my university and started knitting the season 12 Doctor Who scarf. It only took me 6 days to knit the 12 foot long scarf (my father who introduced me to all things geek is its owner now). This family has reconnected me with things at times I lost sight of.
Knitting is a form of therapeutic meditation that I recommend to anyone who even THINKS they may want to learn to knit.
My first words to my BIL when I finally met him were, "I've been waiting forever to meet you." Rest in peace QJ. We miss you every day.
