"If we wonder, "Well how come the Buddha's not always helping us?" I think the buddhas are trying but we aren't very receptive sometimes. Like when our mind is twirling around in afflictions, the Buddha may be trying to communicate and we're totally out to lunch. This is why we do Vajrasattva retreat, to purify a lot of those kind of obscurations. And also why we meditate on lamrim and thought training—to reduce the power of the afflictions so they don't take over the mind so much and so that we can be more receptive to the buddhas' awakening activities.” —Ven. Thubten Chodron

"It's very helpful when you're in a bad mood or upset about something to do the taking and giving meditation. Even if you see that it's your own mind spinning around creating the problem, still, do the taking and giving meditation and think of all the other sentient beings whose minds are spinning around, creating problems, but who are totally unaware that it's their afflictions. Think of the people who are very unhappy, not because of external situations but because of the way they look at the situations, the stories they tell themselves. And so with compassion, think that you take on all that misery and then give them your happiness in the form of your body, possessions, and merit. That's very effective for rebalancing your mind, bringing it to a more neutral state, and for helping to accept our own situation and really think about others with compassion. Then, motivated by compassion, to generate bodhicitta.” —Ven. Thubten Chodron

"Whether we're remembering the past or anticipating the future, it's all a projection of our mind. It's our conceptual mind making stories. We want to be really aware when this starts to happen because we so easily confuse what we're thinking about when we're conceptualizing with the actual object and then we have all this emotional turmoil going on. So when we notice our mind is doing that, we want to bring ourselves back to what's happening right now and not get so lost in our thoughts. It's quite interesting—if we take life moment by moment in that way, every moment can be good.” —Ven. Thubten Chodron

"We become more aware of our mental states by naming our thoughts and emotions. While meditating or going about our daily activities, it is helpful to practice identifying various mental factors and discerning whether they are conducive to happiness and constructive action or detrimental to them. When an affliction manifests in our mind, we must identify the mental factors that are opposed to it and then activate them." —Excerpt from "The Foundation of Buddhist Practice" by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Ven. Chodron
