“It's 11PM and we're called for the eastbound work horse 254 with 12 hours+ of way work between Portage and Milwaukee. We've got two covered wagons on this snowy/rainy miserable night at the Portage round house. I'll make my inspection but first I must try to capture this moment in Milwaukee history. The round house foreman has gone home and its just me and those cold/wet covered wagons. In minutes I'll climb aboard with no Fireman and make my way to the depot to pick up the train crew. Our night will begin getting across to the yard doubling our train together and making our way out onto the eastward main for our nocturnal first six hours.
