38 years ago, my dad and two of his friends summited Katahdin in the fog, completing their Appalachian Trail thru hikes. Last week, the Biscuitman drove 13 hours in two days to climb Katahdin with @_troilet and me. He got to see the mountain on a clear day for the first time, and got to be with me as I completed my triple crown. I've spent all week trying to decide what to write about this. Whenever I finish a hike, I almost immediately feel like it never happened, and I feel a profound sense of loss. But this time, I don't have any hikes planned for the future, and I am still not sure how to say goodbye this thing that has been one of the most important parts of my life for the last four years. But even as I grieve this ending, I'm also feeling a lot of gratitude. My hikes have made it possible for me to become the person who I am today, and have given me some of the most joyful, and some of the hardest, moments of the last few years of my life. My dad has talked to me about his hike for my whole life, and I think it probably still teaches him lessons. 118 miles in 3.5 days. 3.5 days filled with every couple hour tick checks, searching for a tree to break under the shade of and subcummbing to drinking the water you’ve carried in your pack that has been boiled by the sun. The basin is more alive than I imagined. Cactus blooms, more antelope than people, prairie dogs, dozens of wild horses, horny toads, snakes, deer and cows. So many cows. Favorite part being the fresh smell of sage whipping up from the knock-you-off-your-feet wind that did a great job from keeping the sun from melting me into a pile of goo. Being back on flat, low ground again; a beautiful opportunity to bring the daily mileage back up in the high 30’s. To feel not only strong again but actually as if I’m making progress.. faster progress than Colorado. Reviving. Needed. Motivating. With less than half of the trail to go I feel ready for the parts of it coming up that initially drew me to this trek: The Wind River Range, Yellowstone, Glacier. Pulled my first 40 mile day of this trail yesterday, and if that doesn’t scream ready for a burger I don’t know what does.

With a small weather window, we knew we had to summit early in the morning. The day before we finished up the 100 mile, dropped Milo off in Millinocket and made it back to trail all in the same day. It was exhausting and a sunrise push to start our climb seemed daunting. As we climbed, we emerged from the clouds that had rested heavy on us for miles. The sun had not yet made it over the peak but light leaked through the granite illuminating the mountains and valley around us. With trekking poles stored away, we climb with hands and feet, moving with increasing speed as adrenaline kicked in and took over. Blue bird skies were above us and the clouds were below us. The entire climb was so much fun. We loved following the white blazes over giant boulders. We loved trusting our soles against the granite pebbles as we found decent handholds to pull us up and over. All to make it here, to this notorious sign. We made it. It’s neither the beginning nor the end for us, but it feels good.
