Little bit of a look back from Tucson this year as many people would have seen and been amazed by this magnificent “Imperial topaz” from Ouro Preto, Brazil. This significant discovery was made way back in 1735 and has remained the worlds major source. The name “Imperial” was coined in the 19th century in Russia where the Urals was an important source used for orange-pink-red topaz. The Brazilian discoveries however produces magnificent crystals but with almost all of them without matrix! The gem crystals occur in a clay iron stained matrix, commonly found in these sedimentary formations composed of silica and hematite and known as ‘itabirite’. There has been much discussion about the original crystals being part of former pegmatites which have long since decomposed as there is nothing remaining of them. I did ask if I could pick this one up, but the matrix although good is quite soft, it was felt better not too especially with the rarity of this magnificent crystal still embedded on and within its host rock - and what a crystal! 10cm long prism with great termination, translucent and great colour, the perfectly placed lighting showing the incredible deep orange that just makes the crystal glow! It was a case-stealer, the first specimen that caught your eye as you entered the exhibition and very satisfying to look at, like a setting-sun .
