• {Step 1️⃣} Salvage husband’s old, worn-out shirt from the donation pile.
{Step 2️⃣} Research what style of dress I wanted to end up with, and find a good tutorial. I found this excellent free step-by-step tutorial by @tinytrendsla and watched it once all the way through before attempting anything.
{Step 3️⃣} ✂️ Print out provided patterns and cut shirt apart.
{Step 4️⃣} Freak out when hubby comes out and demands to know (as a joke) why I’m cutting up his “favourite” shirt!
{Step 5️⃣} Make dress according to the tutorial. It took me from 10:06am to 12:30pm one morning and that is very quick for a n008 like me! The finished basic dress features a fully lined bodice, gathered waist, and the original but relocated pocket.
{Step 6️⃣} ♀️ Find some leftover scraps and decide to try out ruffly cap sleeves (also known as “fairy wings to help her fly”). The cap sleeves are completely different in size... but OF COURSE this was erm, part of the funky asymmetrical design, and nothing to do with the varying sizes of scraps leftover Got some very helpful inspo and tips from a tutorial at @youandmie
{Step 7️⃣} Find out what embroidery design J would like on the dress. She asks for a rabbit catching flowers that are floating around in the wind.
{Step 8️⃣} ✍️ Sketch some rabbits and work out which one looks best.
{ Step 9️⃣} Start stitching! This takes two days to complete. Notice the four dandelion seeds blowing away... a little nod to her fourth birthday.
{Step } Find an old satin ribbon and sew onto pocket.
{Step 1️⃣1️⃣} Gently bathe finished dress in mildly soaped tepid water, wrap in a fluffy white towel, iron out creases, and finally hang out to dry in the wind.
{Step 1️⃣2️⃣} Meanwhile, grab some more scraps and make a matching hair-bow. Attach to old hair clip.
{Step 1️⃣3️⃣} Press dress again and hang up. Smile at it every time I walk past it
All done! Congratulations if you got this far

Saturday’s bulk haul from @rainbow_grocery. I was in the store with my incredibly dedicated produce and bulk bag maker @be.still.cecil to sew and give away our upcycled bags. To date, my group has now given away 1,469 reusable free bags! @be.still.cecil alone has sewn several hundred of them!
.
On our way home from the event, I did an IG Live and someone asked me if I’m a minimalist. I have always been drawn toward minimalism, much more so after I took a religion class on Gandhi at university in Canada. During that class, I gave away or sold many possessions (including the TV—this was over 20 years ago and I’ve loved not having one all this time). But if you saw my jars, you might not think I’m much of a minimalist! And at the moment, a corner of my living room likes like a fabric store. I also still buy books occasionally. .
We all do this zero-waste thing differently. Even the terms we use to describe the lifestyle vary, from zero-waste living, to low-waste living to low-impact living. Some people simply call it living because they have always lived this way, making do, reusing, repairing and wasting nothing. When I give presentations, I often say that if my grandmothers were alive today, they would ask me “Why are you on a stage showing an audience how to make vegetable broth? Making broth from scraps is just normal!”
.
I make bread. You may prefer to buy the bread. Or you may not eat bread! It all works. So if someone tells you you’re doing zero waste wrong, you just tell them that there’s more than one way to de-label a jar.
.
Link in profile for ways to de-label jars—and remove smells too! .
