Speaking of...school reads! ⠀ .⠀ Happy Hump Day ! So Natasha over @natashaniezgoda challenged everyone to name their favorite school reads this week, as a homage to our teachers growing up for helping all of us develop such a deep relationship with reading! ⠀ .⠀ Fun fact: I couldn’t read until I was 8. The word ‘the’ was literally the bane of my existence but my 3rd grade teacher somehow managed to teach me to read and I’m entirely grateful to her for that. By the time I hit 4th grade, I was a reading machine! But just because I liked to read doesn’t mean I liked everything we read in school. I swear, if anyone says Moby Dick is a favorite of theirs, I’ll lose it. The Jungle is a book about the workingmen of Chicago's slaughter houses at the start of the 20th century. It isn't a cheerful book, as a matter of fact it's definitely one the grimmest I've read. It is the story of Jurgis, a young Lithuanian immigrant who had come to America in hope of a better life for his girlfriend and him. But, as the reader will sadly realize, these immigrants were never given a fair chance to succeed, They thought they'd reached the land of freedom, instead they unwillingly became slaves, slaves to the wage and to the meat packing industry. The first shock of the book comes when we find out about the horrendous conditions in which animals were slaughtered and about what could end up in a can of meat at the time : Diseased animals, unspeakable filth, rats, and even actual human beings …. This is probably the part of the book that most people remember and which made it so famous, it aroused the indignation of the public and actually had an impact on food laws of the time. However that wasn't the main point of the book, it was first and foremost meant to denounce the inhuman working conditions people had to deal with. It depicts a system in which not only the animals were used as products, but also the workers. The workers whose lives were absolutely worthless, to be discarded when the work had taken its toll on them, which would inevitably happen sooner or later. A perverse system that has the workers begging, sometimes even paying, to get any soul-crushing job available, the only thing between them and sure starvation. A system in which the poor could never hope to get justice, not against the rich and powerful. « They were swindlers and thieves of pennies and dimes, and they had been trapped and put out of the way by the swindlers and thieves of millions of dollars. » It's definitely a militant book, but you don't have to agree with its political stance to be utterly moved and outraged by its content. #uptonsinclair #thejungle #bookreviews #signetclassics #signet #literature #chicago #workers #socialism #americanliterature

Q O T D: Do you have a book you read for school that you loved?⠀ --⠀ I read The Jungle in high school and I remember very little of it. What I do remember is that I didn't like it much. It is however on my TBR because I often find that books I didn't like when I was younger have a different effect on me now. ⠀ --⠀ A O T D: I took a Shakespeare class in high school and absolutely loved the plays we read for that class. I also took a creative writing class where we read a memoir by Vietnam veteran Tim O'Brien called The Things They Carried. It was moving and tragic and beautiful. Recently watched: There Will Be Blood (2007). - “I've abandoned my child! I've abandoned my child! I've abandoned my boy!” - Not a single word is spoken until 14 minutes in. When I think about what great films look like, some great examples come to my mind. Apocalypse Now, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and The Revenant. Now I will think of There Will Be Blood. I’ve heard many people say this is a masterpiece. I’d say it is…in its own way. I was actually loving this film throughout most of this film’s runtime until the middle of the film. Everything then just seemed kind of bland. Interesting, but bland. This honestly feels like some weird pacing in the middle of the film. Also, the boy in the film, who plays Daniel Day-Lewis’ son, is pretty much emotionless through his entire time on screen. And while Paul Dano is great actor who I love, I felt like he was overacting a bit in some scenes. Which could have been intently done for his character, I don’t know. I will say this, Daniel Day-Lewis gives one of the all-time best performances from any actor. That’s right. Daniel Day-Lewis is currently the best actor who ever lived and this is his best performance. The milkshake and baptism scene are what makes the film for me. There’s also really great cinematography (at times), really good editing, sound mixing, and a fantastic score by Jonny Greenwood. The fact that this film was done for only $25 million dollars is also really impressive. Paul Thomas Anderson is one of my favorite filmmakers. I really liked/love this film. I’ll watch to watch this film a few more times. But not right now, maybe a year from now so I have time to digest the film. Maybe years from now, I’ll learn to fully appreciate this.
