Couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the season at US Adult Figure Skating Nationals It’s been an incredible year for ColorFlow Skating: skating in shows, choreographing, coaching, connecting with skaters and skating clubs all over the country and even to far away countries #colorflowcrew I’m so grateful for figure skating and for getting to experience so many aspects of the sport, fills me up with so much joy & light. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Adult Nationals was so special. I crafted a performance for the Masters Dramatic Entertainment category, something that felt so “me” from beginning to end. Similar to how I designed & created FlowSuits, I had a strong desire for the specific type of program I wanted to bring to life. I wanted to embody nature on ice - sounds of rushing water, bird calls, tribal drums, & wind. I started by taking related music samples, mixed them, and layered on singing animal calls. After hours of time searching for the right sounds & editing together, choreographing began! How I choreograph all starts with improv. I listen to the music off-ice and just dance to it. Once I feel a certain movement that I love, I repeat it and add it as part of the routine. After rounds of off-ice iterations, I’ll take it to the ice and continue to tweak and play with it, still keeping that idea of improv in mind, as if every time I do my program, it’s the first. For me, the magic really comes in the moment and once I feel like things are “planned” it doesn’t feel as powerful. The last step was the designing and putting together the costume; I imagined looking like a green fairy, lots of leaves, shades of green & brown with sparkling crystals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The first time I performed this program was at Adult Pacific Coast Sectionals (photos posted are from Sectionals) and wow what a feeling to have it come to life and share it with the audience, friends, & judges. When I got off the ice, I felt so alive and so happy to have made this happen. I couldn’t wait to do it again at Nationals! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At Nationals, I skated just as well and as a bonus got to compete against an old friend from University of Michigan (and we both got on the podium!)....
