Throw back to one of my favorite roadside attractions of all time!⁠ Created in 1989 by Dustin Shuler, The Spindle (AKA the Car Kabob AKA Cars on a Spike) had graced Cermak Plaza in Berwyn, Illinois for almost as long as I’d been alive. The spindle sculpture towered above the parked cars in the lot, showcasing vehicles from the late 1960s to early 1980s impaled on a 50-foot spike. To me, this Illinois roadside attraction is best known as being my first real glimpse of roadside oddities, to others it is probably best known for its cameo in the Bohemian Rhapsody scene in the Wayne’s World film.⁠ ⁠ Unfortunately, it was torn down in 2008 to make way for a Walgreens.⁠ ⁠ Want more info on The Spindle? If you’ve ever taken a Highway 1 road trip through Big Sur, you’ll recognize the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge. And if you haven't, you may just recognize it from the HBO hit series "Big Little Lies." The bridge is featured in the both the title sequence of the show, as well as in shots whenever Nicole Kidman’s character, Celeste, is shown driving to and from her house. In reality, the bridge is about a 15-minute drive south of where Celeste’s Carmel Highlands home is located and a full 30-minute drive south from the rest of the filming locations around the towns of Monterey and Carmel, but that shouldn’t stop you from making the drive to the scenic spot that serves as the unofficial entrance to the Big Sur area.
