#wagonweek doesnt come out of nowhere, of course.
The Dutch are a people of practical nature. Most of us are living under seal level, and we have enough work as it is keeping our feet dry every day. We just don’t care for dressing up; go to any Dutch wedding and see for yourself. We’re practical, thrifty and down to earth. Most of us, anyway. This is probably the reason why the station wagon has always been very popular in our little country, even when they weren’t cool yet. Why spend your money on an expensive coupé if you can have more doors, more metal and more space for less money? Station wagons are just perfect for transporting bikes with flat tyres, or hauling your kids to football when it’s raining again.
Of course the one and only Dutch car brand Daf had station wagons in its program. There were even two: the two-pot Daf 44 combi and the four-pot Daf 55 combi. Like the 44 and 55 sedan, both combi’s had the same bodywork, styled by Giovanni Michelotti. Daf stationwagons are very rare these days, not many of them are left.

⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ www.goose-racing.at ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀#gooseracing #tuning #racing #race #cup #malossi #polini #stage6 #scooter #scootertuning #2stroke #piaggio #zip #pocketrocket #firststart #highend #highquality #variomatic #cvt #minarelli #sprint #cup
DAF was our nationalautomotive pride and joy between 1958 and 1975. Although ‘pride’ is a little overstated. DAFs we’re considered seriously uncool, and if your parents had one, you’d better make sure nobody knew.
DAF crashing became a national sport. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, every year there was an event called the reversed race. It looked like a regular banger race, but backwards. Many DAFs ended their lives being trashed in the reverse racing shows. The smart belt-driven Variomatic transmission had an infinite amount of gears, in both directions. The top speed in reverse was the same as the top speed going forward: it was the perfect car for driving backwards.
Reversed racing was a big thing. It was broadcasted on national TV, and commented by famous comedian, André van Duin. It looks impossibly polluting and dangerous by today’s standards. Back then of course, nobody cared. It was huge fun seeing those silly DAF’s your grandmother drove, being trashed to pieces.
If you want to see for yourself, check YouTube and search with the Dutch term ‘achteruitrijrace’. .
