While the original saw alien life from outer space replicating and then displacing people in a small California town, this version transfers the proceedings to San Francisco, as faux humans, or ‘pods,’ seamlessly take over individual households and then government agencies (some in the city today would probably opt for pods over current officials). . The film, based on a serialized 1954 novel by Jack Finney, still has much to say about human fears of replacement by aliens or bots of all sorts, as well as forced conformity and subversion of emotions in a mass produced society. What struck me about the film from a technical standpoint was how great it sounded, featuring the squishy, crunchy sounds of alien plant-based births to highlighting otherwise meaningless moments like the repetitious sound of a rusty playground swing set (swung on by Robert Duvall in priestly garb). Dolby understandably viewed the film upon its release as the gold standard for cinematic sound techniques and clarity. . The cast sounds stellar on paper, yet still exceeds all expectations. As always, Donald Sutherland’s signatures facial expressions, furtive glances and wry humor turns each moment captivating, and his screen chemistry with Brooke Adams, who also marked the best year of her career by co-starring with Richard Gere in ‘Days of Heaven,’ is truly heartfelt. Here is Jeff Goldblum’s first significant role, which already sees the origins of the fast-talking, wise-cracking persona he would continue perfecting before hitting his commercial apex in the 90s. Leonard Nimoy mixes Spock-level seriousness with ‘Me Generation’ relationship-advising credentials in the role of a popular book-selling psychiatrist. Finally, for this Deadhead, seeing Jerry Garcia’s name in the title credits for supplying the sounds from a hobo’s banjo was the cherry on top of this tasty San Francisco-themed flick.
