24th May 2019 marks the bicentennial of the birth of Queen Victoria. Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent was born at 4.15 a.m. at Kensington Palace to Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She was fifth in line to throne. Her father died within a year of her birth and she was raised by her mother and her aid, Sir John Conroy, under strict rules known as ‘The Kensington System.’ On 20th June 1837, upon the death of her uncle, William IV, Victoria acceded to the throne. During her 63 year, seven month, and three day reign she came to reign over half of the world. Until 2015, she was Britain’s longest reigning monarch. The Queen died at the age of 81 on 22 January 1901. Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert, had nine children. Among their descendants are the current monarchs of the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Spain and the heads of the former Royal Houses of Greece, Romania, Yugoslavia, Italy (Aosta), Germany, and Russia.

This painting depicts the coronation of Queen Victoria, which took place at Westminster Abbey on 28 June 1838. Now on loan to #KensingtonPalace from @bradfordmdc for our #Victoria200 exhibition, the artwork was meticulously restored prior to display, removing surface dirt and discoloured varnish as well as over-painting, to reveal incredible details. The painting currently hangs in the Red Saloon, where Victoria held her first Privy Council meeting aged 18 on her first morning as Queen. Come and see the painting: link in bio!
