And the 1840s corset is finished. I love the silhouette it gives, and it will be the perfect foundation for carrying those heavy petticoats and the dress. The busk closure wasn't unheard of at this time, but wasn't common. However, as I will be putting the corset on alone, it is a vital addition here. The professional shots of the Muguet corset are back! Here's a side shot that provides a good view of the tum and bust shaping. @chesebroderie's hand embroidery and flossing looks amazing here! I love the rounded and slightly cupped bust shape that the gores provide. Perfect for the rounder bust shape popular in the 1880s. The tum is also slightly rounded (another silhouette feature of the late 1870s and 80s). I can't wait to make another one of these corsets. More yummy photos coming up this week! : @dtgonzales01

Sometimes the next step forward feels like 9 steps back. . Mockup No. 2, a direct construction of the original c. 1893 Symington pattern, was beautiful. (And has been receiving lots of love after her cheeky appearance on this week’s video! ) The shaping was extraordinary, it was extremely comfortable and caused no pain—but it didn’t fit. And it was very, very far from fitting this wonky and Victorianly Unideal Body. . For Mockup No. 3 I decided to restart the project from an entirely new direction: by beginning with a basic, non-historical thing of my own draft so that I could at least get the basic shape of my asymmetry before building out the proper historical silhouette. But the shaping of this turned out less than impressive, and my spine promptly began vehement fits of protest in c. five minutes (which might possibly be a record). But we learned some Very Important Things today: the Victorians *really, really* knew what they were doing with all this. . So maybe it’s time to go back to the history. But...make it fit, somehow. That would be nice. . Eva F. Warner on the day of her wedding in 1897. Her husband, I. De Var Warner, and his brother, Lucien Warner, owned a successful corset business called Warner Brothers Corset Company. Eva is seen here wearing one of the companies most popular corsets. The company specialized in making health corsets which features shoulder straps, more flexible boning, and lateral bust support. By the late 1800s, the Warner brothers were able to retire as millionaires and passed down the business to Dr. De Var’s son, D.H. The business remained successful throughout the early 1900s, making upwards of $7 million, and $12.6 million by the early 1920s. The company ultimately fell under during the Jazz age when women stopped wearing corsets and opted for more comfortable undergarments. The company kept losing money throughout the years, and when D.H. died in 1934, his son-in-law took over and worked on making new, more up-to-date products for the company. . . . Happy #internationalwomensday! . Today I am celebrating all of the extraordinary women who have, whether knowingly or not, taught me most of what I know and do today. Some of them are alive and well and probably reading this (♥️); but a host of them lived and died decades—if not centuries—ago, and whose acts and wisdom survive to me through words alone. . Today I am celebrating the women who fought for some of the rights we have today; the women who wrote down their lives and their thoughts and experiences and bits of valuable sewing wisdom that inspire me to learn things through making; the women of past centuries who knew and did and were a lot more than we give them credit for. . Thank you, to all of you, in every time period past and present. I can only hope to one day pass along similar strength and sagacity as have most graciously been given to me. ♥️ .
