How lucky and blessed am I to be celebrating New Years for the third time this year!? First, my traditional New Year (December 31st) but celebrated in Chiang, Mai Thailand, then Chinese New Year (February 5th) in Hanoi, Vietnam and now Myanmar’s New Year - Thingyan Festival (Water Festival) in Bagan, Myanmar. This last one is actually the most fun and honestly is now my favorite way to celebrate New Year! After celebrating here, I think that New Year's should be received like this every year. Maybe a new tradition for me? Maha Thingyan, or Water Festival, is a Burmese public holiday that allows Buddhists to celebrate their religion while reconnecting with their cultural roots. It is celebrated for 4 days with water festivities, parades, concerts, dancing and more. You will see people of all ages throwing water from buckets, shooting waterguns or using waterhoses to wet anyone who passes them by, especially people on motorbikes or in open vehicles. Anyhoo, I just have to add how much I am in love with Myanmar and with its people. Their huge smiles every day, their hospitality and just how authentic this country still is, despite the modern world, is wonderfully refreshing. Honestly, it is a totally new experience for me every day. Happy New Year Myanmar! Thank you to everyone in Bagan who made me feel like a child again for the last 4 days!
