One of my favourite feelings is laughing with someone and realising half way through how much you enjoy them and their existence. . Happiness is..A homemade Cheesecake Some paint, some sing and some knit to breakfree from the chaos of daily routine, I prefer to bake away the chaos & crankiness accumulated over a few days of daily dealings. Baking is one of my creative outlets. Having said that, I am careful not to bake when I am overly stressed as it invariably connects to stress eating. After all heaps of sugar and blobs of butter wouldn't be the right way to work through scrambled feelings under stress. Initially it was difficult for me to get my bakes right, but after a few failed attempts I have learnt to be more careful in choosing recipes to match my skill set and I focus on exacting the measurement and method prescribed in the recipe, Unlike my cooking where I mostly ball park the quantities. I always thought Cheesecakes were a big mumbo jumbo and way off of my baking abilities. I bluntly refused to even attempt making it for the longest time inspite of several requests from Yashie untill I came across this recipe which had homemade creamcheese made with hung curd. Aah.....a budget cheesecake would mean I had scope to iron out glitches in a few attempts without it leaving a deep dent on my wallet :-)))). That works. Lets do this, I said. #15/2019 for #deepikasareediary On Saturday I draped my all time favorite saree for a evening function. I was supposed to post on time for @designerrajirm #andhamainatelugucheera but was super busy to come on social media . . I picked this unique combination color block style uppada from a weaver in a small exhibition in our colony in India. I remember spotting this saree from a pile of sarees folded & stacked. I just knew this would be gorgeous and when I saw the unique neon green, yellow, purple color block on blue striped body, I just droooled. I got a ton of compliments. I really don’t have to explain how amazing, light & comfortable Uppada silks feel and yet they have that rich look. Paired with a croptop I got made on one of my India trips. Mamoni had won it in a lucky draw held in her office. A red food grade inflatable plastic water carrier. Our first portable one. It emerged out of a tiny packet surprising us that how on earth will it carry five litres of water. But it did. The moment Mamoni blew it up bit by bit, it turned into a large hollow cube with a strap, a tap and a collapsible glass in a side pocket. During our travels, I was given the responsibility of inflating the carrier, filling it with water n carrying it around. Five litres of water felt heavy but I didn't mind much. Duties were duties. Every time Baba, Dada or Mamoni wanted water, I quickly took out the collapsible glass, opened it out and served them a glass. Baba once said, "This is too tiny. Let's carry a proper glass next time." I was a bit crestfallen. It was as if the little glass was being shunned. Like it was not being given a change to show that it indeed could do its duties well... . Last week while cleaning one of the kitchen cupboards at Mamoni's, I found the red water carrier. The food grade plastic crispy with age. Tiny cracks appeared on its faded body. Bono tried to inflate it. I tried too. But in vain. A strange cloying smell came out of its synthetic body. Mamoni said, "Maybe it's time to discard it. Its touring days are long over." . Bono played with it for a while before Ruby packed it in a paper and threw it in the dustbin. The collapsible glass on the table implored to be retained though. The last vestige of our memories from our trips as little children... . . कच्चे आम की खट्टी-मीठी यादें Enter May 1st and Kaccha Aam(Raw mango) is almost a sidelight to the ripe yellow mangoes around the markets everywhere. The very mention of Raw mangoes transports most of us to our childhood. Back in the school days, Kaccha aam and Summer Vacays had a strong connection. From stealing cut pieces of the tangy raw mangoes meant for Maa's annual pickle project on a mega scale to Sourcing slices of Totapuri( Parrot faced)mangoes from the man who brought his cart full of sour candies like Amla, Imli, Phalsa(Falsa) etc every evening near the play yard, raw mangoes ruled and were relished by most of us. A pinch of salt and a small raw mango could be eaten anywhere and anytime. Summer holidays meant hours of outdoor play and knocking down mangoes straight from the tree with a stick or stone during this playtime was an uncharted agenda. Jashoda masi( aunty) who owned that mango tree was kind not to complain but would gently wean us off promising sweet n ripe ones if only we could let the raw mangoes be :)) What's your connect with raw mangoes?
