Just riding around on my huffy who is appropriately named Belafonte cuz he’s yellow and pretty reading 1950’s domestic fiction being the carefree black girl I’ve always been . . . . I love reading a good throwback because it always hits you with some crucial vocab. Do you know about “slattern”? It means a dirty and unkept woman. I’ve reclaimed and repurposed the term so it isn’t gender specific. Just like bitch. So like, yesterday I referred to Trump as a slattern bitch. You’re welcome ☺️.

Double tap if you absolutely judge a book by it’s cover ‍♀️ • It’s awful to admit that I saw this one at the library and thought “This one looks pretty” but everyone has their book choosing process. Mine’s just a little unorthodox. • My week is super crazy, balancing VBS, work, and life but I’ll sneak a few moments in to finish up The Third Hotel (which I truly don’t want to put down). I’m just a few chapters in and I’m hooked. It’s set in Havana and there’s a dead husband, need a say more? A mini-book review is headed your way • My to be read pile is... piling up. What’s next your on your list?

Thank you so much to my friends over at @riverheadbooks for allowing me to be one of the first people to get my hands on Jacqueline Woodson’s new novel, Red at the Bone! I’ve been meaning to get into Jacqueline Woodson’s work for a while now, so when they surprised me with this ARC, I was very excited. This novel was a very beautifully written story that takes place in the past, present and future. It tells the story of two families that came together through an unexpected teenage pregnancy. There were multiple narrators, which I personally didn’t mind. It wasn’t difficult to follow at all. The whole thing was less than 200 pages and once I really got into the novel, I couldn’t put it down. I will say that I was left wanting to know more about the characters. That’s not to say that the story felt incomplete, but I was just so interested in them that I was curious. This was a great introduction to Jacqueline Woodson’s work and if you’re interested in coming-of-age stories, you’ll definitely wanna check this out. I think the synopsis may contain what some people consider spoilers, so just in case, I’ll just post it in the comments for those who may be interested.

“Black mothers lived in a different America from white mothers.” Motherhood So White is a memoir by Nefertiti Austin on race, gender, and parenting in America. What sets this memoir apart is that it is one of the very few books available that single, Black mothers who adopt outside of the family may be able to immediately identify with. Austin carries you through a very honest account about her journey to parenthood. We experience the joyful moments along with the challenges she’s faced along the way. She also covers how isolating the adoption experience was for her because everything from blogs to kid books portrayed the white parent experience in transracial adoptions. It is a book that is honest, vulnerable, and uplifting all at the same time. Release date: September 24, 2019. #motherhoodsowhite #blackgirlsread #bookstagram #bookish #blackauthors #wellreadblackgirl #blackgirlsreadtoo #books #bookstagrammer #blackmoms

Audre Lorde enjoying life is my summer ‘19 mood ❤️ let us have more joy! ⁣ ‎”Once we recognize what it is we are feeling, once we recognize we can feel deeply, love deeply, can feel joy, then we will demand that all parts of our lives produce that kind of joy.” #AudreLorde⁣ ⁣ #wellreadblackgirl

This is a Kathleen Collins appreciation post I'm forever intrigued by her trajectory -- working tirelessly on her art and dedicating so much of her life to it, then dying before she could see the far-reaching and long-term impact of her words. She kept writing despite little to no tangible proof of success. I don't know who needs to hear this, but keep writing. #forcoloredgirlsbookclub #bookstagram #readblackwomen #diversespines #wellreadblackgirl

I had the pleasure of introducing @elainewelteroth at her event in DC this past Saturday with @politicsprose . I have to admit that I was so star struck that I didn’t even get to tell her I really enjoyed her book #morethanenough . I thought I was walking into a book full of advice and fashion tips, but it was so much more than that. It was a true memoir and it reminded me that even the people I admire are still human. It reminded me that we are “enough” and being ourselves and making the best decisions for yourself will always put you where you need to be. ❤️ #blackgirlmagic #wellreadblackgirl #blackbooks #readsoullit #bookstagram #politicsandprose #bookgirlmagic #bookworm #elainewelteroth
