I got to try out my new Black Armoury poleaxe in sparring yesterday. The thing's a beast, and a ton of fun to fight with. This bout begins with me in a slight variation of Fiore's Middle Iron Gate and with some light testing of each other's guards, then quickly closes when lock the spear with the shaft if the poleaxe. I step in to try and hook the spear with the queue of the axe, which fails, so I step back and strike down with the head. I'm too close, so I hit with the shaft, but manage to drop the head onto my opponent's shoulder and cut him there. After the cut, you can see the head comes off. This is a problem we've had repeatedly in sparring with this weapon, so I'll probably have to find a way to secure it. Other than that, the thing has been flawless and nothing but fun.

The swept hilt rapier was a fantastic later period sword primarily built around the thrust. Making its appearance in the 16th century and popular during the #renaissance it was not made like it's predecessors with a heavy combat #blade but with a finer more agile blade for precision thrusts. A brief segment of a slow, free-flow sparring session with one of my students. ———————————————————————- Goals: In this session we have a focus on encouraging his control of the centre before committing to attacks. I am presenting him with basic threats but am also passively waiting for safe openings towards which I will cut or thrust, and I am encouraging him to do the same. ———————————————————————- Safety and Gear: We are sparring cooperatively and working only with basic eye protection to encourage body awareness, light but focused strikes and freedom of movement. The tools we are using are a Calimacil and Atelier Nemesis sword, and custom foam bucklers made by @b3imaginationstudio ———————————————————————- Structure: I am hip-hinging, which postures my upper body forward towards my opponent and keeps my lower body out of range. The buckler and sword work in concert to create a triangle of defence, and the circle of the buckler faces out towards my opponent at all times. ———————————————————————- Improvements: My action is slow and matched at the pace of my partner, to create a fair situation where he can focus on range and centre control. If we were competitively sparring or worse, there are dozens of things I could do to gain advantage. The most simple would be to alter my rhythm which would interrupt his action and expose him to my attack. ———————————————————————- ⚒Additionally, the tools we are using do not reflect the level of binding mechanics that can be achieved using well-balanced, historically-designed steel.
