HAPPY FRIDAY! We have left Cappadocia for the mountains up east - but we figure this wonderland deserves a part two! The second night we found a lonely valley in the outskirts, with spectacular stone formations, farmlands, and hidden caves. As it was a bit far away from everything, we didn’t expect balloons. But, once again we got lucky! The following morning our alarm clock happened to be the sound of the balloons starting up again! And even though it didn’t beat our first morning balloonwise, we really fell in love with these mountain tops! Which of our Cappadocia spots do you like best? CAPPADOCIA!⛰When we woke up this morning we had to pinch ourselves to make sure we weren’t still dreaming. We had arrived in the sunset, and said to each other that we didn’t really care if we would be close enough to see the balloons - we still had one of the most beautiful camping spots of this entire trip. We were high up on a cliff, all alone, surrounded by merengue like mountains, grape vines, and with the glimpses of Love valley under us. So, when we woke up at dawn of the extremely loud sound of balloons starting up, we jumped out of our sleeping bags. It turned out there was a starting point just over the narrow valley, and soon the morning sky filled up with hundreds of colourful balloons. We realised two stray dogs had guarded us throughout the night, and together we all four watched one of the most beautiful sunrises we had ever seen! No, it’s not Salar de Uyuni!We are now in central Turkey, at Tuz Gülü, one of the largest salt flats in Asia. When we first heard of the place we didn’t know what to expect: would it be dry and white, watery and shiny, or surrealistic pinkish? Luckily, it turned out it was all of it at the same time! We arrived in the sunset, and spent the night camping next to the windy lake, waking up cycling around on the cracked white surface in the sunrise. Later on we splashed into the salty water, just to see the bikes reflecting under us. And, when we thought we had seen it all, we passed another small salt lake near by, all beautifully pink and fairytale like! YEEEY! -> We’ve cycled from Sweden to Asia! About a week ago we reached Turkey, and yesterday evening we rolled into Istanbul! We recall the feeling of reaching a new continent by bike, from our trip from Sweden to Africa some years ago. It somehow makes the world grow bigger and become smaller at the same time! We are now woken up by the early prayer calls from the nearby mosques, and the streets are starting to get bustling! And, even though we just have had a week in Turkey, we’re pretty sure we’ll like the rest of it. The people we’ve met have been incredibly friendly and hospitable, offering us rooms for the night, çay in almost every corner, and lots of happy honking on the road! The one thing that hasn’t been a bikers dream was the last 50 km before coming to Istanbul! We are back on the road again after 10 days in vibrant Istanbul! We had to apply for our Iranian visas, rest, explore the city, and do a check up on Kornelia’s back. But two days ago we got the green light - both from the doctor, and from the Iranian embassy! We just need to take it easy! Our days after the break have once again shown us the warmth of Turkish people. The first night we asked an elderly couple if we could pitch our tent on their land. They showed us a spot under a walnut tree, and spoiled us with tons of fresh fruit and greens from their farm. The next morning we woke up to an even bigger Turkish feast, and had a great time with their son @arslankamil_mudanya, who showed us how all the veggies grow! The hospitality of this family really dug deep into our hearts! And it just continued. On our supermarket break, @engin.nisa gave us ice cream so we shouldn’t forget Turkey. As we prepared lunch, a guy from a nearby restaurant gave us tea, just before a teacher passed and offered us a rest at his school. And, in the evening, when we stopped by a gas station, the staff asked if we wanted to put the tent on their property. We did, and then slept guarded by four dogs, until early morning, when we woke up to more tea, and a nice chat. Both people and climate have been warm so far, but today a chilly rain hit us! "At last! Rainy season has arrived !", are 99% of people cheering throughout Uganda, myself belonging to the remaining 1% (police station, April 2019) . As often in Uganda, police stations are casual places where to spend the night. In many African countries, I can also camp freely around schools, administrations or religious edifices. Regularly, village chiefs or head teachers invite me home as well! . Generally, I spend very little money on accomodation. Maybe once or twice a month. Except in Northern Ethiopia and Burundi where I relied on cheap guesthouses. Why? The "Mary episode" accounts for Ethiopia, while I narrowly escaped a weekend in jail when asking Burundian police if I could stay with them for the night #bikeon though

We didn’t see any bicycle path in the last 2.000 kilometers until we arrived on the Chief Ladiga and Silver Comet Trail, a 90 mile bicycle trail on old railway tracks. The trail ends in Atlanta and we couldn’t have a better way to arrive in a big city, avoiding the heavy traffic around it. We had a broken spoke, the first one in 26.000 kilometers. Luckily Zoë got some training by @stalenfiets1970 and is almost an export in repairing spokes. We were lucky that the broken spoke was not on the derailleur side and was easy to remove. Since the start in Amsterdam we have a set of spare spokes which we could finally use. Although it was a small repair, Zoë was proud that she did it, and Olivier that Zoë knows how to do it.
