To cater for the vast numbers of Jewish people fleeing the pogroms to begin a new life in America, kosher china, silver-plate and utensils were provided, marked in Hebrew and English either 'meat' or ‘milk'. ⠀ The history of the White Star Line is long and fascinating, the story of the Titanic being its most infamous chapter. This plate fragment comes later, the registration stamp dates it after 1928 and before 1934 (when White Star was forced into a merger with Cunard). This photograph captured at a drydock in Belfast, Ireland on March 6th, 1912 depicts the very last time the sister ships RMS Olympic (left) and RMS Titanic (right) were together in the same image. The Titanic was moved out of her drydock so that the Olympic could have a damaged propeller blade replaced. . . . The Olympic was originally completed on May 31st, 1911, the Titanic was originally completed on April 2nd, 1912, and the Britannic, their other sister, was completed on December 12th, 1915. Though for obvious reasons the Titanic has become the most legendary of the three ships over the last century. All three ships were designed specifically to be the largest and the most luxurious passenger ships of their time. What some don't know is that during her time as a hospital ship in World War One, the HMHS Britannic also suffered a terrible fate since she was sunk by an enemy naval mine near the Greek island of Kea on November 21st, 1916, though only thirty lives were lost compared to over 1,500 on the Titanic just over four years earlier. Violet Jessup, a nurse who survived the Britannic's sinking, had also survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, and before that she was also onboard the RMS Olympic when it accidentally collided with the HMS Hawke in 1911. The Britannic was the largest ship lost during the war. . . . The Olympic was the only one of these three sisters which was not lost to the sea. But after a long history which included serving as a troopship in the Great War, she was finally sold and scrapped between 1935 and 1937.
