How WE choose to deal with OUR trauma is OUR choice. . The reasons why we did or did not come forward with our assault is no ones business but our own. There are countless more reasons I personally did not go forward with mine, and it pains me so much to feel the weight of the country’s judgment against the brave and heroic Doctor Christine Blasey Ford as to why she didn’t come forward sooner. Even our own president is on twitter asking this. . If we don’t go forward we are blamed. If we do go forward we are called liars. I am disgusted. I am saddened. I am hurt. . Listening to Dr. Ford’s opening statement, I couldn’t help but to relive my own experience. It is triggering for me because I was also assaulted at 15. I put myself in her shoes and I imagine what it must be like to not only relive all of it, but to do it in the public spotlight. I imagine if I had to answer questions about that awful night, and I don’t think I could. Not just because of how difficult it would be, but because I have spent a long time trying to block out all of the memories from that time. . I stand here as a feminist. As a woman. As a survivor. And miracles are real. Cyntoia Brown, Sex-trafficked & kidnapped at 16, had been in prison for the past 13 years and just last month was told she had to serve another 51 to be eligible for parole for having to kill her kidnapper and trafficker while trying to escape. A child. We immediately mobilized and shared her story urging everyone to email and call Tennessee Governor Haslam’s office to ask that he grant Cyntoia full clemency for what had unjustly happened to her when she was a child. This has been a triggering week with #survivingRKelly These girls matter, these girls are victims and we have not done a good job protecting them. Being Black and seeing the justice system fail so many of our own I don’t know what I thought would come of my calling and emailing but like I told a good friend of mine, I knew I had to keep emailing and calling and sharing her story. I knew I couldn’t be a passerby to injustice. And most importantly, regardless of the outcome, I believe in showing up for people.
