I love this scene from The King and I (1956) This movie is soo sweet! Yet the end kills me every time! I found out something cool today though! Marni Nixon was in The Sound Of Music as one of the nuns singing the song Maria! #deborahkerr #yulbrynner #shallwedance1956 #marninixon #thesoundofmusic #classicsfan

“The Ten Commandments”, you’ve guessed it by now that I love old classical movies. If you’d care to know why, the answer is simple they had more meanings to them, not too many digital enhancements, body, face modifications etc, the storylines were perfectly, brilliantly thought of and narrated. The actors/actresses were “real looking”, the beauty they always portrayed was authentic, somewhat relatable not so artificial or unauthentic, like it is nowadays.

Remembering actor Yul Brynner (1920-1985), who passed away 33 years ago today . Born in Russia, Brynner’s childhood took him from China to Paris before, at the age of 20, he and his mother joined his older sister in the United States. After studying acting in New York, Brynner made his Broadway debut in a minor role in 1941. Although roles were hard to find, he took whatever parts he could get over the next few years while also finding work directing television programs. In 1950, at the suggestion of former stage co-star Mary Martin (1913-1990), Brynner reluctantly auditioned for the role that would become his signature, as King Mongkut in “The King and I”. He starred in the original Broadway production, as well as various touring productions, 2 later Broadway revivals, and the 1956 film version. He took home 2 Tony Awards for his work (one for the original production and one for the 1985 revival) and the Academy Award for the movie. Having made his screen debut in 1949 followed a few years later by “The King and I” (1956), Brynner would also star in films such as “The Ten Commandments” (1956), “Anastasia” (1956), “The Brothers Karamazov” (1958), “The Magnificent Seven” (1960), and “Return of the Magnificent Seven” (1966). By the 1970s, his popularity had declined and he made his final screen appearance in 1976. Brynner was married 4 times and divorced 3. He had 5 children, 3 biological and 2 adopted. Having been a smoker from the age of 12 until quitting at the age of 51, Brynner was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 1983. In fact, he was aware of his imminent death when he starred in his last Broadway run of “The King and I” and used the publicity surrounding that event to urge the public to not smoke. He lost his battle with cancer in 1985 at just 65 years old . #yulbrynner #rip #gonetoosoon #gonebutnotforgotten #gonebutneverforgotten #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #classicactor #vintageactor #stageactor #oldhollywoodactor #talldarkandhandsome #thekingandi #academyawardwinner #tonyawardwinner
