CHAGALL, MALEVICH & MORE IN MADRID
Until 5 May 2019
View classics of #ArteRevolución, including from the great collection of the #russianmuseum #StPetersburg. Plus the amazing #costakis collection.
A▫️MARC CHAGALL
.
'The father of Surrealism' according to Andre Breton. You get the opportunity to look closely at Marc's work, including his time in #vitebsk #belarus (▶️2).
.
B▫️BRIEF TRAJECTORY OF MALEVICH (▶️1,3-8 & 10)▫️
.
Founder of Suprematism, the first conscious non-objective art style, based on shape and colour.
.
Get to see his earlier #Fauvist red self-portrait (▶️3▫️1909). His #Cubist portrait of Ivan Kliun (▶️4▫️1913). Intense colour followed by analysis of form.
.
Malevich turned a corner. He combined the extremes of colour and form. With a dialetical explosion he arrived at 'The Black Square' in 1915. That is his gift to the world. One day the world will receive his genius gift. 104 years is too soon for most people to comprehend its genius.
.
View his larger rework of the Black Square (▶️5▫️C. 1920-23 ▫️79.5 x 79.5cm), the starting point of his new art, followed by the Black Cross and Black Circle (▶️1, 5-7). From these starting points he quickly expanded forms, colours with movement to create Dynamic Suprematism (▶️8▫️1916).
.
He gave up painting as 'the thing' in 1919, concentrating on writing, teaching, architectural concepts and more. The reworks of 'The Black Square' , 'Black Cross' and 'Black Circle' are at the route of his pedagogical system. Today, they are viewed as autonomous art.
.
Kazimir went back to painting from 1927, mixing Suprematism in portraits and landscapes (▶️10).
.
C▫️MORE OF THE RUSSIAN AVANT GARDE▫️.
.
Other artists on display, include Liubov Popova (▶️9), Rozanova, Goncharova and more.
I have booked my flight for April to see some old friends I photographed in #Malaga (▶️1, 2-8 & 10), #Brussels (▶️2) and #Thessaloniki (▶️o). Plus some new ones to look at very closely.

⚫ NIKOLAI SUETIN
1897-1954
FROM SUPREMATISM TO THE THE ORDER OF LENIN
SUPREMATISM ▫️1920-21 ▶️1-5
A dynamic composition of geometric forms in black, red and blue on a white background.
.
Photo 1 is my imagined background for this painting.
.
Photos from #madrid #spain in April 2019.
.
⚪1RED VITEBSK
Suetin attended the People's Art School in Vitebsk, from 1918-1922. Initially under the leadership of Marc Chagall. The art school was open to all supporting the revolution. It was a shining beacon of the new besieged Worker's State. The school was housed in a former mansion of a local factory owner. Classes were available during the day and at night. Red Army soldiers, like Suetin, arrived and took lessons with guns at their sides. Then went back to the Civil War front.
.
⚫2⚪SUPREMATISM
Nikolai quickly fell under the influence of Master, Kazimir Malevich, after he arrived in November 1919. Nikolai adopted Kazimir's Suprematist style, in painting and then into everyday life in the 1920s.
.
See the Suprematist inkwell from 1923, that combines porcelain, design, with an architectural design for the future (unrealised) ▶️7-8. Plus a coffee pot ▶️9. Photos of the #costakis collection of #thessaloniki #greece in #istanbul #turkey.
.
3⚫SUPREMATIST TROIKA⚪
Suetin became known as one of the trioka with Malevich and Ilya Chasnik. They left for St Petersburg together in 1922 and worked closely together. When Malevich died in 1935, he built the coffin.
.
4 THE ORDER OF LENIN⚫
Suetin never gave up on Suprematism. Even if he was was forced to disguise it, after the mid-1930s.
.
He survived and became the Artisic Director for the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory. He designed International exhibitions for the Soviet Union. For these later contributions, he was awarded the Order of #Lenin in 1944.

KAZIMIR MALEVICH'S CLASSIC IN LONDON - A CLOSE-UP PHOTO ESSAY
DYNAMIC SUPREMATISM
1916▫️80 x 80cm ▫️Oil on canvas
(Verso in Malevich's handwriting: "Supremus no.57. 1916").
.
A▫️INSIGHT INTO TECHNIQUE
1▫️White base paint applied with florid brush strokes (▶️2-3) to prime the canvas, which illuminates the added top-layered paint.
.
2▫️Pencilled-lines added for shape (▶️5-9).
.
3▫️Unmixed paint (such as Cobalt Blue ▶️9) combined with subtle colour modulations (▶️2).
.
B▫️PERSONAL ELATION & ANXIETY IN 1916
From 1915, the elation of inventing and showcasing the first fully abstract painting style. He called this Suprematism (= most high), based on shape and colour. Anxiety as he has now been called-up as a soldier in the barbaric First World War. Would he be alive in 1917?
.
C▫️RUSHED EXECUTION
Spot his pencilled guide-lines and the canvas surfacing (▶️2, 5-8). This painting profoundly extends his starting point of new art, his genius Black Square. This is MALEVICH at his most creative and intuitive.
.
D▫️DIAGONAL DIVIDERS
Originating from Cubism, as an analytical painting device to slice the object, the Supremus 50 series used the diagonal axis as an organiser. The centred grey triangle provides a complex pointed arranger for form and colour.
E▫️FRAGILE EQUILIBRIUM
The centred grey triangle provides stability. Dynamism added with three pointed clusters of shapes. Here using a widened and softer colour palette than in 1915
F▫️ONE OF THE MANY RUSSIAN AVANT GARDES
From the golden generation. Despite similar themes as #Chagall (in last post), with large area of white, diagonal divider and geometric shape, Malevich foreclosed on the object from real life. He went his own way.
.
G▫️1932
Part of Malevich's last public exhibition of painting in St. Petersburg in 1932. This denotes its importance for Malevich, following on from 'The Black Square' ▫️1915.

KAZIMIR MALEVICH UP CLOSE
SUPREMATIST COMPOSITION WITH PLANE IN PROJECTION
1916▪️Oil on canvas▪️57 x 57cm.
Painted at the inception of Suprematism in 1915. White background, black and two added primary colours. The vivid yellow plane in projection dominates. This can certainly be seen as an evolution of more form and two primary colours, following the genius and radical Black Square (1915) - His self-proclaimed zero point of non-objective art.
.
This painting again highlight another great example of Malevich being so creative and eager to execute this and then move forward with other creations. We see the bare canvas peak through(▶️ 6), examples of both unclean and smudged straight lines (▶️ 4-7). The need for Malevich to move onto the next idea shouts out from its rushed execution. Intuitive creation at its finest. I love the facture (#faktura) too. The human hand of Malevich.
.
I bumped into this in an unexpected view at Sotheby's in London on 8 April 2017. I got really excited (▶️video at 8). Even though I had seen it a number of times at Tate Modern in 2014.
.
Perhaps seeing this painting on its own got me to take a closer look. This is the first time I present many of these photos.

.
BMALEVICH'S IN HIS OWN WORDS FROM 1916
.
1SUPREMATISM IS NON-OBJECTIVE ART
.
To produce favorite objects and little nooks of nature is just like a thief being enraptured by his shackled legs.
.
Only dull and impotent artists veil their work with sincerity. Art requires truth, not sincerity.
Objects (from nature) have vanished like smoke; to attain the new artistic culture, art advances toward creation as an end in itself and toward domination over the forms of nature.
.
2COLOUR IS KEY FOR EARLY SUPREMATISM
.
I have untied the knots of wisdom and liberated the consciousness of color!

SUPREMATISM: AIRPLANE FLYING◾1915
Oil on canvas◾58.1 x 48.3 cm ■
.
1◾SUPREMATISM'S BIRTH◾
This painting was first shown at the public starting point of Malevich's Suprematism, at '0.10 - The Last Futurist Exhibition' of 1915, in Petrograd (Now #StPetersburg) ▶️6 and its partial reconstruction at the #tatemodern in 2014 ▶️7-8. The first conscious all non-objective painting style. Pure painting based on colour and geometric form■
.
2◾HISTORY BEFORE OUR EYES◾
The Black Square. The Red Square. More forms. What next? All the primary colours? Hold on! Eureka!. A thought jumps into Kazik's mind as he is painting. The red thin quadrilateral is uncharacteristically overlapped by a yellow form▶️3. Perhaps the first crossed-over line in his Suprematism◾
.
3◾CAN YOU FORGET 'THE AIRPLANE FLYING'? ◾
.
Malevich had not fully considered how 'Airplane Flying' reduced its subversive impact. It provides us with a key to construct meaning. Immediately, we can think of a fragmented Cubist analysis of a plane flying. Or a birds-eye view of a landscape. Or the energy of the inter-relation of the forms, related to Futurism. Frustrated with this, Malevich, firstly, requested we forget the earthbound title■
.
4◾MALEVICH LEARNED◾
Following '0.10', Malevich would not use titles related to natural world objects. Not providing us with the comfort of metaphorical (Jacques Lacan, via Roman Jakobson) substitution, which narrows meaning. The authentic image enables reflection from the saturated imagery of 2019◾
.
5◾ALTERNATIVE TO BOMBING & WAR
Suprematism supported a war against old culture (of the Tsar, Kaiser and Kings). Kazik was opposed to their war on the body. He was soon to be called-up to the ungreat war. Malevich seized #Lenin and the Bolsheviks offering a better world. Old culture was more resilient then.
