The Gresham Palace Budapest. It is an amazing Art Nouveau building from 1906. After many owners now it is a luxury hotel, located near the Danube. Right after, and before a storm, the colours, the atmosphere is very different. Photographing during these conditions gives a much more contrasty, colourful image. Warped Perspectives | 3 // As we slide into a long weekend here in Hong Kong, I thought I'd wrap up the warped perspectives series with a sideways play on an iconic old neighbourhood over in Ma Tau Kok, Kowloon, known as the "13 Streets" area (馬頭角十三街). This neighbourhood has been around for more than half a century, and consists of very densely packed low-level mixed-used blocks, with walk-up apartments sitting above street level businesses. The 11 narrow laneways have all been given poetic names, and most involve favoured animals in Chinese culture (e.g. "Calling Deer Street" and "Safe Swallow Street"). The neighbourhood itself has become quite run down over the years and it seems that the dominant trades and businesses here are motor vehicle servicing centres and scrap metal dealers and recyclers, so despite the colourful buildings, the area has a rather grimy and gritty feel. In the near future, the metro (MTR) will have a station on a new line at nearby Sung Wong Toi, and like it or not, the invisible hand of gentrification will almost certainly touch on the 13 Streets.  One hopes that this may lead to a revitalization of this area but not at the expense of its unique characteristics. As you can see from the shot, the blocks are painted in a lovely variety of colours that are quite attractive for photography.  Photographing them from above has proved challenging, however.  A more traditional lookdown shot won't allow the colourful facades to be seen, and you're left with the grime and the grit of the streets and the ramshackle rooftops.  A side-on profile is nice (from the ground level in particular) but the lack of height means that there's no real benefit to a drone shot.  The front-on profile looking back at all 13 Streets (which is what this shot is based on) is the most usual angle, but I have purposely focused on the smaller details, and warped the perspective to really draw out those interesting colours in the tightly-packed buildings.
