Dress that shocked 1900's Paris ✨ At the 1908 Prix du Prince races at Longchamp, an upscale event that also included something like a fashion show, scandal erupted. The models appeared in tight, slinky dresses that left very little to the imagination. It was evident that underneath they didn't wear a corset. Who was behind this shocking display? Her name was Jeanne Margaine-Lacroix, and although she forever changed women’s fashion, her name has been largely forgotten. In a rare interview given to the press, just days after her dresses scandalised the crowd at Longchamp, she explained her design philosophy and the construction of the dress which was worn without a corset: “I have been patiently at work for years, educating the public to what women’s dresses really should be …only two garments cover the body – there is first a tight elastic silk jersey ….the outer garment is made to serve as its own corset, the bodice being strengthened with a little whalebone, not enough however to destroy its suppleness.” The fashion soon spread out of France and into other parts of Europe. i’ve never done a vintage challenge before, so i figured i’d start today (a day late, as usual) with #thevintagefashionchallenge. i’m Ainsley, i’m about to wrap up a masters degree in english literature, and i love edwardian and 1910s fashions. i mostly post edwardian pieces, but there really isn’t a decade i don’t adore, and in my day-to-day life i tend to wear a mix of many decades. i started wearing vintage as soon as i was old enough to appreciate it, and for me that was at about 16. i was raised in georgia but now live across the country in overcast oregon, which has turned out to be one of my favorite places. this year i discovered that it’s quite possible to mix my two favorite things - fashion and literature - so i’ve been on a research journey about fashion in modernist literature, and i hope this pairing can continue somehow in my life beyond academia. as of right now that’s “me in a nutshell.”
