I have to talk for a sec about one of my fav movies, Just The Way You Are (1984) starring Kristy McNichol. The movie is pretty legendary for its troubled production; originally titled “I Won’t Dance”, the film began shooting in late 1982 and was soon after stalled because Kristy was dealing with some health related problems. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and took a year off to recuperate. The film continued production the following winter and was finally released in November 1984. In the film, Kristy plays Susan Berlanger, a flautist with a handicap she obtained in childhood which resulted in her wearing a leg brace. It’s something she’s very self-conscious about, despite her witty and charming personality. After a few events, she finally realizes she hasn’t been living to her full potential and wants to see the world, so she ditches her concert in Europe and goes to a resort in the French Alps. She disguised her leg and tries to blend in and pretty much learns that she’s great... just the way she is. it’s a cheesy movie, definitely. But Kristy totally sells the character and fills the screen with energy and personality. Theres no question here, this girl can act. I also really love the very synth heavy score used in the film. The home of Elvira in the film ELVIRA: MISTRESS OF THE DARK (1988) once stood at the end of the “King’s Row” residential backlot set at Warner Bros. Studios. The home is now gone,but fortunately I still had an image of the house showing how it appeared a few years ago when I blogged about the locations for the film THE MUSIC MAN (1962). Yes, River City, Iowa shares the same town as Elvira. Today this site has been redesigned to incorporate the addition of Stage 48, a new soundstage that rotates different exhibits including props and costumes, to display for guests visiting on a studio tour. In the comparison above, I included Elvira’s house as it appears in the film (before she paints it bright colors), an image of the house from a few years ago (see arrow for Elvira’s house) and a photo of how this section appears now. Big post today! I'm wearing my Lily costume from "Legend" to the DC Sakura Matsuri this Saturday where I'll be judging the @animeusaconvention Fashion Show. As I was checking the costume over I decided to make some much needed adjustments. I added gussets at the arm holes to allow better range of motion and it's made such a difference! Previously I couldn't lift my arms more than shoulder height without difficulty. I also decided to add watercolors to the skirt. This is a feature I'd caught glimpses of in the movie but couldn't make out the details. After rewatching the movie again, I looked and found some very grainy reference photos and one great photo that shows colors painted all over the skirt. So I went for it and added on pearls and ribbon flowers, too.
