'ADITNALTA: AN ISLAND DISPERSED ACROSS THE INTERNET' by Mond Qu @mondqu , fifth year project from 2013 awarded the AA Diploma with Honours.⠀ ⠀ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aditnálta ⠀ The UN have recently reported financial links between Mexico’s Los Zeta cartel and the illegal trading of the rare earth mineral Otinif, a material critical to the manufacture of the next generation of super faster digital processors. Seen from Google earth Aditnálta is an anonymous island off the East Coast of Mexico but as the world’s richest source of Otinif it is a landscape being consumed by our hunger for technology. Hidden from this distanced aerial view are vast underground worker towns and oppressive mining conditions. Aditnálta is an outsourced landscape embedded in all the pieces of technology we carry in our pockets.⠀ ⠀ Aditnálta is also entirely fictional. In our Department of Ghost Geographies Mond Qu has constructed and dispersed the forged fragments of this island across the internet. This imaginary place is made manifest through hoax listing on Wikipedia and Google maps, live webcams of scale model stage sets, faked articles on news sites and green screen CGI composites on Flickr, Youtube and Panoramio. Just like the real landscapes of outsourced electronics production we consume Aditnálta at a distance, through edited media narratives, disconnected from the realties that go on there. 'THE CRACK IN THE WALL' by Maridia Kafetzopolou, fifth year project from 2016 awarded the AA Diploma with Honours.⠀ ⠀ Through physical and visual transformations this continuous archipelago takes us on a journey of a set of relationships...⠀ ⠀ The Architect uses the frame as his medium to construct spatial continuity. Instead of using the frame to isolate the architect uses the frame to incorporate with what sits outside the frame.⠀ ⠀ By reconfiguring and unfolding, the project is trying to explore architecture as a medium of change and transformation as opposed to be considered as a static immovable object.⠀ ⠀ The frame constantly swifts the relationship between the object and its function.⠀ Even though the shape remains the same, the idea of the object constantly changes and the space changes.⠀ The object defeats its self and it becomes something new.⠀ ⠀ Through these continuous transformations, the object doesn’t lie in its form, nor it’s shape or idea, but it is lies between the form and the performance.⠀ ⠀ With every drop, with every move, architecture recreates itself, de-feats its previous purpose and it becomes something new.⠀ ⠀ ...Perhaps a new fan-tasy, but definitely new reality.⠀ ⠀ That’s why the project is not a building. 'RECONCILING INFRASTRUCTURAL ARTEFACTS' by Roberto Boettger, diploma project from 2015.⠀ ⠀ Is it possible that redundant operative form is able to define future infrastructure? ⠀ ⠀ The testing grounds are the mutually exclusive operational fields of Smithfield Meat Market (1868) and Farringdon Crossrail Station (2017). The latter is projected to pass 27 meters below the market building. As the operations of the meat-packing shrink because of demand, its obsolete infrastructural elements are revealed through a process of dismantling, cutting and underpinning. The strategy is to puncture the horizontality of the Market with the verticality of the Crossrail, and to negotiate material and operational aspects into new form by reutilizing what is able to gather and transmit.
