Beautiful and extremely rare nineteenth century silk Yoruba agbada chief’s robe from Nigeria. Unusually both the warp and the weft of the asooke cloth strips that make up this robe are hand spun silk alaari bought to Nigeria across the Sahara by camel caravan from North Africa, while the yellow warp stripes are imported industrially spun silk (also brought across the Sahara, or obtained from colonial traders in the south.) Both of these fibres were highly expensive  marking this robe out as a prestigious,luxury garment for a wealthy chief. Green embroidery was often combined with the vibrant ‘red’ of the silk. Use of silk for both warp and weft (rather than using a cotton weft as was more typical) made this a light and fragile robe and there is a large old patched repair on the back but otherwise condition is excellent and this is a rare survivor that was doubtless a much prized family heirloom over many generations.
