1848... Follow @advocatesofmalt for more! It’s time for a history lesson. During our visit to the Macallan Distillery we chanced upon this rather delectable bottle from 1848. Ever inquisitive, the Advocates quickly set themselves the challenge of looking for something older.... but nothing could be found. While there may simply be no more reason for this than pre 1848 Macallans were too good to keep undrunk for 160 years, it is poignant that James Davidson, whose name adorns this bottle and who joined the Distillery as a partner in its year of bottling, is credited with instituting Macallan’s policy of using only high grade barley in its whiskies. No doubt something that has helped cement Macallan’s leading reputation today. Tasted our first Speyside Whisky Festival 2019 whiskies with The Boutique-Y Whisky Company @whiskyshopdufftown. This is an 11 year old dram distilled at The Linkwood Distillery. Our next whiskies were enjoyed at the Glenfiddich Distillery. The first was Glenfiddich’s #01 IPA Experiment - an interesting choice from the #advocatesofmalt who are not IPA fans! This is an Experimental series whisky - and one that should be labelled a success! The whisky was finished in casks seasoned with India Pale Ale. The hops are definitely present adding an enduring sweetness to a fresh and zesty tipple. The Advocates love something a bit different and rate this an exciting 8 Stills. Having chopped the wood, the Advocates set to whittling their trunks to a smooth staff before - and there’s really no other way to say it - rubbing them vigorously to burn the hoops. A Scottish Tea Follow @advocatesofmalt for more! While one of the Advocates journeyed to Balmoral to have tea with the Queen (although it turned out his agent hadn’t told her he was coming so she wasn’t there...) the other Advocate was treated to an afternoon tea @dowanshotel. A bounty of savoury and sweet treats in the Hotel’s beautiful surroundings were complemented by a smooth Aultmore 12 (ignore the glass - it is Aultmore 12!). Although the Advocates work in a team, this Advocate couldn’t help but think that had the other been with him this could have been another 8 Stills. The Afternoon Tea was an easy 10! One for a future purchase and review! Let the DEED show Follow @advocatesofmalt for more As one of the Advocates battled the snow to meet friends at Balmoral, the other, flying solo, was treated to an amazing afternoon at The Aberlour Distillery. Aberlour holds a special place in this Advocate’s heart as it was the first whisky he tasted outside of the usual beginner malts. Led by the fantastic Kirsten, the Advocate was taken on an epic journey through James Fleming’s vision - to make a whisky that made a difference. His family’s motto - “Let the deed show” (actions speak louder than words) - is present in every dram, manifested through the Distillery’s investment in each and every bottle. His legacy still shines throughout the village, including the local hospital and Penny Bridge. Of course the highlight was the whisky! A pioneer of the Festival, Aberlour let the Advocate mix his own personal 12 year malt by mixing sherry and American Oak casks, creating his own perspective on Aberlour’s double maturation. We’re not saying Aberlour can be improved, but the Advocate enjoyed his creation! More on that will follow but for now enjoy the pictures and proof (in the last picture) that although corporate owned, the strength of family remains strong in one of Speyside’s most characterful whiskies. Our first distillery visit was to the fantastic Glenfiddich Distillery on the edge of Dufftown. Nestled at the foot of Balvenie Castle, the Grant family’s signature Distillery was built by hand, stone by stone, in 1886 and 1887. William Grant’s name for the Distillery, Glenfiddich, is Gaelic for Valley of the Deer. The fourth day saw the Advocates take to the Dufftown Golf Course. A fantastic day - photos of which will follow - focused on two facets of the quintessential Scottish lifestyle(!), golf and whisky. The Advocates love both! A number of drams were enjoyed through the day, including a Singleton and two Balvenies. But The Beast of Dufftown was a new one for both the Advocates. The Mortlach 12 enjoyed by the Advocates was flagged as a fruity whisky with a delicate citrus undertone, characteristics which rapidly made themselves known. However a smooth toffee followed, balancing out a nicely charactered dram. The Advocates rate The Beast a strong 7 Stills. That the bottle is almost empty says it all!
