Technique Tip Tuesday - Open Dive
Safety Protocol: Prior to practicing open drops you must be at the Int/Adv Level & have adequate body awareness & strength. Since there is no 'safety' holding you in at the bottom of the drop the risk is greater. Always practice under the supervision of a professional, with apparatus rigged from a solid anchor point & a crash mat.
1️⃣ Begin from same side knee hook (rt. side in video), swim behind for the tail with your left hand & wrap your bottom leg from the inside out (Catchers). It is best to try this skill low to the mat when learning.
2️⃣ Climb above your knee & pass your shoulders to the front one hand at a time. Press your hips forward & grip the pole behind you with thumbs pointing down.
3️⃣ Unwind the wrap off your left leg & grab the tail with your left hand. Allow for approx. 1 foot of slack (3rd of a meter) with your arm to the side & slightly in front of you. Maintain a firm grip on the tail with your left hand.
4️⃣ Legs are active & open wider than shoulder distance behind you.
5️⃣ Inhale, as you exhale release your right hand & firmly press it into your right hip. Pike forward (fold at your torso) & allow your legs to go overhead with control. Grip the fabric with your right hand & place your left arm next to your side arriving in back balance.
6️⃣ Reach your right arm up high on the pole & flag the fabric from back to front. Step on the tail to exit. *It’s important to have a solid back balance prior to doing open dive. Practicing the variation shown in the video with the hammock knot can be very beneficial for leaning the pathway while having a safety. •
Common Mistakes:
#1 Not piking forward enough - This leads to rotating around very quickly which makes it challenging to control & could result in a fall at the end of the rotation.
#2 Not having the right amount of slack in step 3 - You need enough slack for your lower back to rotate into. Not enough or too much could equal instability at the bottom of the drop.
#3 Not having a firm enough grip when placing the hand on hip in step 5. You MUST grab the fabric next to your hip when rotating around. •
