The Concorde was a supersonic passenger jet liner with a max speed of Mach 2.04, over twice the speed of sound! It is one of only 2 supersonic transport aircraft. (The other is the Tupolov, Soviet built ). For comparison, the B777 has a max of 0.89 (or 0.87 depending on model) with a typical cruise speed of 0.83.

I remember where I was when I saw the images of the only fatal accident for Concorde fire, on departure. I was at the Comox airforce Base, as a cadet, on my glider scholarship course. Along with the cadets in my flight, I watched in awe, jaw dropping at the news scene we saw on the screens above us in the canteen. One claim was that a metallic strip on the runway caused the crash.

A point I have kept in mind from that accident: Consider if you have a malfunction, to request the tower to conduct a runway inspection for possible debris, for other subsequent departing aircraft.
