This long-exposure photograph by ESO Photo Ambassador Petr Horálek captures the hive of activity that is ESO’s La Silla Observatory, the distant glow of roads and settlements in the Chilean Atacama Desert, and the unmissable faint green radiance of airglow (produced by light in Earth’s upper atmosphere).⠀ ⠀ Directly above them, the dazzling constellation of Orion (The Hunter) dominates the view, as giant clouds and arcs of ionised gas — called emission nebulae, and seen here as red patches — encompass the imagined form of mythological hunter. ⠀ ⠀ The La Silla Observatory is located in northern Chile at an altitude of 2400 metres. It enjoys some of the darkest night skies on Earth and has been an ESO stronghold since the 1960s. Hello again living beings, here @usuario.png for my second post today. What I'm sharing now it's a time-lapse made on December 2018 near Laureles, Rivera Department. It shows the apparent motion of the sky for near 2 hours before moon rising. On the first frame the camera is pointing to the celestial south pole. You can see, all rotating around the pole, the Magellanic Clouds and the southern side of our Milky Way galaxy, including Carina Nebula, Coalsack Nebula, Southern Cross, and rising between the trees Alpha Centauri, the nearest neighborhood of the sun. Also, very dim, you can see some airglow shining on the atmosphere. On the second frame the camera is pointing to the northeast. You can see Orion on the center pursuing the Pleyades (as narrated by Greek mythology), that are hiding near the horizon. Near the end the sky starts getting lighter, because the moon rising on the east. The yellow lights that appears on some frames are fireflies, very common here during summer. #startrails #timelapse #airglow #nightsky Want to be featured? The World at Night (TWAN) : Rainbow Airglow over the Azores Photo by @Miguel_Claro Seen on Astronomy Picture of the Day too. Why would the sky glow like a giant repeating rainbow? Airglow. Air glows all of the time, but it is usually hard to see. A disturbance however -- like an approaching storm -- may cause noticeable rippling in the Earth's atmosphere. These gravity waves are oscillations in air analogous to those created when a rock is thrown in calm water. The long-duration exposure nearly along the vertical walls of airglow likely made the undulating structure particularly visible. OK, but where do the colors originate? The deep red glow likely originates from OH molecules about 87-kilometers high, excited by ultraviolet light from the Sun. The orange and green airglow is likely caused by sodium and oxygen atoms slightly higher up. The image was captured during a climb up Mount Pico in the Azores of Portugal. Ground lights originate from the island of Faial in the Atlantic Ocean. A spectacular sky is visible through this banded airglow, with the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy running up the image center, and M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, visible near the top left. @jeffvisualart back with my second post of the day, coming to you from Lake Superior Provincial Park. Just designated as a dark sky preserve it offers some fantastic skies and foreground vistas. Taken with my Nikon d850 and the tamron 15-30 at 15mm. Sky is 2 min tracked with the sky adventurer at 1600 iso and f4.5. Then with the tracker off and iso down to 640 I light painted the foreground (over and over and over) until I got it just right. Both exposures were then blended together manually in photoshop. Daniele Gasparri (@gasparridaniele) (almost) live from the Atacama desert, close to the city of Copiapó, in the southern (and with better skies!) boundary of the desert. At 4400 meters of altitude, in the heart of the desert, on the Cordillera de los Andes, the sky is absolutely stunning. More than 100 miles from the nearest town, with 5% of humidity, the stars shine like no other place on Earth. I was just coming back from an astrophotography session, when I decided to stop in the middle of a dusty road and take a picture of the Milky Way visible until the horizon. I was lucky enough to spot a bright meteor in the middle of Small Magellanic Cloud! The picture was taken with a Sony A7s camera and 12 mm f2.8 fisheye lens. It's the average of 6 shots of 30 seconds at 6400 ISO. ESO Picture of the Week — Nature’s Fireworks.⁣ ⁣ At our La Silla Observatory in #Chile, the #sky is so clear and untroubled by man-made sources of light that it appears as if a brightly-coloured celestial #firework display is in progress!⁣ ⁣ The pink “fireworks” themselves are actually large accumulations of glowing gas known as nebulae. To the right of the #MilkyWay lie the Magellanic Clouds, two nearby dwarf #galaxies. Rising up from the horizon on the left of the image is a pale, white-ish column of light. This is the glow of Zodiacal light, caused by sunlight scattering off dust particles in the Solar System. At the centre of the image is another glowing region — green this time. This is #airglow, a phenomenon that occurs high up in the Earth’s #atmosphere, where a variety of processes create ghostly coloured light.⁣ ⁣ Image credit: P.
