3D Printed Earth Wall with Staircase | Open Thesis Fabrication | 2019 . A new step in architectural 3d printing has been done . @iaacbcn and WASP present an innovative prototype of a #3Dprinted wall designed and engineered by IAAC and realised by #CraneWASP within the @iaac_otf research. . The prototype 1:1 represents a wall portion 40 cm thick, with timber elements interlocked, providing support for stairs and floor structures, accurately designed for being anchored to the printed part. . This work can be considered a first significant step towards the realization of load-bearing earthen structures. Indeed, the wall has been realized employing a mixture of clay and rice fibres, provided by @ricehouse.it for this specific purpose.

Repetitive patterns are used to enhance the aesthetic aspect of an object in various domains as in architecture, automotive or product industry. The interesting thing for me is when they also have a technical role so that they combine both aesthetic and performance aspects. In order to fulfill their role, they may have to be dynamic, as on the Al Bahar Towers in Abu Dhabi that have a kinetic facade covered with many triangle "umbrellas" opening and closing to stop the sunlight and acting like a second skin. Gaia | 3D Printed Earth House | 2018 . Gaia offers a highly efficient way to use raw materials in the building industry to achieve at the same time relevant thermal performances and complex design. . Rice husk, as a waste material of rice cultivation, has been used for thermal insulation by filling holes within the walls. The U-value of walls has been quantified in 0,249 W/m²K, a significant achievement considering its low-cost and its large availability in agriculture. . Natural ventilation has been managed by generating a continuous articulated chamber along the entire wall, in connection with crawl space beyond the floor. Airflow allows obtaining internal healthy comfort conditions, preventing from moisture and excessive solar heating. . Link in bio.
