ALLERGY NEWS —————————————— SCIENTISTS DISCOVER IMMUNE CELL SUBTYPE IN MICE THAT DRIVES ALLERGIC REACTIONS . by NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases . Allergies can be life-threatening when they cause anaphylaxis, an extreme reaction with constriction of the airways and a sudden drop in blood pressure. Scientists have identified a subtype of immune cell that drives the production of antibodies associated with anaphylaxis and other allergic reactions. The research reveals a potential target for new therapies to prevent severe allergic reactions. . Investigators at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, Farmington, Connecticut, and their collaborators discovered a subtype of T cells -- called T follicular helper cell 13, or Tfh13 cells -- in laboratory mice bred to have a rare genetic immune disease called DOCK8 immunodeficiency syndrome. In humans, DOCK8 deficiency leads to recurrent viral infections of the skin and respiratory system and to severe allergies and asthma. . Allergies and anaphylaxis are linked to the production of high levels of high-affinity IgE antibodies, which bind strongly to allergens to spur allergic reactions. IT’S NOT A FOOD PHOTO—say what? . When I posted about my husband and I’s trip to Southern Utah on my Instagram Stories this weekend I got a decent amount of questions asking how we leave our food allergic children. . We had my parents drive four hours each way to watch them, and we’ve had a trusted family friend and my sister watch them for extended days in the past. . It’s so scary and vulnerable to leave them in someone else’s care—but it also feels scary and vulnerable to not take care of my most important relationship. . I need my spousal relationship to be just as healthy as my kids, so that when the hard times come with medically complicated kids we have something to draw from. . It was a quick getaway, but so wonderful to have uninterrupted conversation, not worry about what was on a menu, not carry a diaper bag and to sleep in! . I would encourage all of you, even if it’s expensive and you have to save up, or you cash in a lot of favors, to still make time for you! . Our allergy kids are our world and I want to model a healthy, happy parental relationship for them and taking time for ourselves does that. . What do you do for self and relationship care .
