Gee, so much talking about myself lately is not my style! But here goes Day 22 of #marchmeetthemaker: Proud of
This pair of gilded earrings represents the quilled jewelry I enjoy making and teaching others how to make. It was the start of the type of project I planned to include in what turned out to be The Art of Quilling Paper Jewelry. This how-to isn’t in the book, however, it’s free for the taking on my blog.
Let me turn you on to the fun of making stylish and even sophisticated jewelry from simple paper strips. The post is titled Quilling 101: Gilded Earrings. You’ll find it at allthingspaper.net

Day 23 of #marchmeetthemaker: Top Tip or Advice
A nitty gritty tip for quillers: Card stock works well for ‘on-edge’ linear quillwork, but what to do with the lighter weight gilded-edge strips when a design calls for leafy stems, just as one example, that would benefit from added strength?
I use my index finger to coat the length of one side of a strip with a clear gel adhesive and then place another strip directly on top, effectively creating a double thickness strip. You’ll quickly learn how much glue is too much... you don’t want it oozing out the edges. But if that happens, all is not lost. Gently run a damp cloth down both sides while the glue is still wet and set the strip aside to dry... it will be fine.
This same tip applies when making quilled jewelry... the paper/glue sandwich creates a surprisingly strong, yet still flexible strip, not to mention one with brilliant shine.
Just be sure to let the glue dry 110% - thoroughly - totally - completely (have I made my point?!) before you try to work with the new strip, otherwise it will buckle. Sob, there’s no fixing that.
Today’s #marchmeetthemaker prompt is Motivation/Goals.
I stay motivated because I enjoy what I do... whether it’s designing a new how-to project, interviewing an established paper artist or crafter, or featuring the work of an emerging artist on my blog.
Where do I see myself in five years? With any luck still creating original designs. I have enough projects on hand for another book, so that’s a possibility. I’ve also been toying with the idea of hosting a podcast... it’s just the inkling of a thought at the moment though. Would you listen?
This image is a marriage certificate I quilled for a Virginia couple. The scrollwork later became my blog header. (Lettering collaboration with @rivabrowncalligrapher.) The bride requested a quilled chandelier be placed center top of the large sheet (22x30 inches). Swipe to see. It was one of the most challenging requests I’ve taken on... there are no do-overs on a project like this one!
Day 18’s #marchmeetthemaker prompt is Mistake or Lesson
Oh yes, I’ve made my share and learned a lot along the way. Still am. One mistake would be quilling too industriously before a craft show, enough to cause hand tendonitis. Making multiples of any one design is not for me.
A lesson I resisted for too long was to not undervalue what I’m able to do. Transitioning from hobby to employment required a change in mindset. As it turned out, serious clients are indeed willing to pay well for something they admire and can’t do themselves.
Lettering on this collaborative quilled ketubah was done by @rivabrowncalligrapher.

Playing around with animal shapes from a flat piece of paper.
We are thinking about using it as a shape to dress a lightbulb What do you think?
Suggestions for other animals are welcome
