In what is claimed as the most significant development in aircraft design since the invention of wing warping by the Wright brothers, BAE Systems and the University of Manchester flew the MAGMA unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to demonstrate two innovative flow control technologies which could revolutionise future aircraft design. MAGMA, designed and developed by researchers at The University of Manchester in collaboration with engineers from BAE Systems, successfully trialled the two ‘flap-free’ technologies earlier this month at the Llanbedr Airfield, UK. The technologies demonstrated in the trials were: Wing Circulation Control: Taking air from the aircraft engine and blowing it supersonically through narrow slots around a specially shaped wing tailing edge in order to control the aircraft. Fluidic Thrust Vectoring: Controlling the aircraft by blowing air jets inside the nozzle to deflect the exhaust jet and generate a control force. The technologies have been designed to improve the control and performance of aircraft. By replacing moving surfaces with a simpler ‘blown air’ solution, the trials have paved the way for engineers to create better performing aircraft that are lighter, more reliable and cheaper to operate. Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER S-100 Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Air System (UAS) has been selected by Norway’s Andøya Test Center to carry out extensive search and rescue trials as part of the Arctic 2030 project. According to the company, the CAMCOPTER S-100 in its typical configuration can operate for six hours continuously. It can simultaneously carry multiple payloads, offering payload flexibility to the user. As a VTOL platform, the CAMCOPTER does not require additional start or recovery equipment and its minimal footprint is perfect for offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) with small deck sizes. The S-100 can fly at temperatures down to -40°C. The CAMCOPTER S-100 is planned to be equipped with an Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera gimbal, an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch payload, an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver and a Maritime Broadband Radio (MBR) by Radionor. Tests are scheduled to commence in the fall of 2019 with the UAS being deployed from Norwegian Coast Guard vessels in Andfjorden, Northern Norway. Ukraine has been developing a number of defense equipment and weapons meant for combat helicopters. The country’s state-run Ukroboronprom has developed gyro-stabilizing platforms for use in Mi-type combat helicopters, in cooperation with PJSC "Motor Sich" and a number of other private enterprises. The gyro-stabilizing platforms are integrated in the Barrier missile control system used in Mi-type combat helicopters, the company said in a press release Tuesday. The state enterprise Photopribor has developed the PM-LKT suspension module that passed field tests last year. It is designed to provide search, detection and identification of tanks or armored vehicle-type ground targets. Izyum Instrument-Making Plant, together with other Ukrainian defense sector factories, have developed a new-generation optical gunsight station OPSN-I according to NATO standards. It still needs to be tested to confirm its ability to work under extreme conditions. OPSN-I includes high-power optics, a thermal imager, laser controls and range finders. It can be installed on various types of military equipment, in particular helicopters, airplanes, drones, armored vehicles and ships. Northrop Grumman has won a $15 million modification contract from the US Navy for Airborne Laser Mine Detection System (ALMDS) pod system. ALMDS detects, classifies and localizes near-surface, moored, sea mines. The ALMDS is integrated with the MH-60S helicopter to provide rapid wide-area reconnaissance and assessment of mine threats in littoral zones, confined straits, choke points, and amphibious objective areas, the US Department of Defense said in a statement Wednesday.
